MeriGraham 0 Posted November 3, 2016 Hello everybody! Just checking in with a worrisome thing that is happening to me this last week. I am 2 1/2 weeks post-op from my gastric sleeve/hiatal hernia surgery, and i have been experiencing heartburn. It makes me feel pretty worried....is this normal? Daniellewi 69 Posted November 3, 2016 Yes, mine was super bad for a few months after surgery. I had to make sure I ate something every 2 hours or it was super uncomfortable even with PPI meds twice per day. I'm 10 months out now and down to 1 PPI per day. I still get acid feeling in tummy now and then but it's not constant anymore. It has gotten much better. Good luck!! suzzzzz 1,005 Posted November 4, 2016 I had a hiatal hernia repair along with the sleeve and haven't had any problems with heartburn or acid. Fixing the hernia should help with that because the stomach is back in the correct position. However, the sleeve can cause acid reflux at first because the stomach still produces the same amount of acid until it adjusts to the much smaller size. Aggiemae 739 Posted November 7, 2016 Yes, normal. Did you get guard meds to take. I got them for six weeks though I have never had reflux before. . I get a strong reminder to take them if I forget!

GmaDiana 81 Posted November 8, 2016 I had gastric sleeve in 2011.Everything was going great. In the fall of 2015 started having issues with acid and bile reflux.I didn't feel anything but then starting coughing a lot. I started more Prilosec and checked in with my weight loss Dr.Had to have an endoscope and upper GI.The reflux was starting to damage the esophagus. I also had my hiatal hernia repaired but it failed too.I am having revision surgery on Nov. 22nd to Gastric Bypass to eliminate the acid and bile reflux. They said if they repaired the hiatal hernia again it would fail. This area moves while you are breathing so it can fail. 30 -40 % gastric sleeve can have this problem. Hope this helps others. LittleLizzieLilliput 919 Posted November 8, 2016 I had a large hiatal hernia repair and my acid indigestion was really bad. I'm slowly coming out of that stage but talk to your surgeon. I was told to take OTC ant-acids and they helped tremendously. Also, don't drink 30 minutes before bed or eat 4 hours before bed. And sleep with lots of pillows under your head and torso for a while. Armygalbonnie 643 Posted November 8, 2016 I am one week post-op and I'm really suffering with acid. I didn't have a hernia but history of GERD. My surgeon started me today on liquid Calfrate, to coat my stomach. I'm hoping this will help. The constant gnawing feels like hunger.
