No supervised diet?

Recommended Posts

Although my insurance required a 6 month history of a supervised diet, they accepted my weight watchers booklet showing my weekly meetings and my weigh ins. From consultation to surgery took me just over 2 months. I was a happy girl.

I didn't have to do any supervised diet or anything like that.....I have Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida. They only required that my bmi be above 40 and I attend an bariatric educational session. It was 2 months from my initial consult and my surgery date....so very quick process for me!!

I think it depends on the interpreter. Sometimes the Dr office - not understanding the requirements- requires more than what the insurance company is requiring. It's best to call your ins company member services and ask them about the requirements.

I have United Healthcare PPO Choice Plus, a 6 month supervised diet was required. 6 months seems like a long time, but it actually goes by pretty fast.

My insurance did not require weight lose before WLS and unless a person is so obese that the surgery is high skin neither did the hospital base program I attended. They did require pre operative education. My insurance required 6 months 6 classes and 12 provider appointments. Some insurance requires less but the programs minimum per op programs is 3 months.

I leaned a great deal from the classes.

Even if insurances do not require a program, most surgeons do. Even if my insurance didn't require it, my surgeon would have.

Neither my insurance or my surgeon required me to lose weight.

The NIH did a study that found little benefit for pre op surgery. My surgeon only requires pre op weight loss for pts so obese that surgery would be dangerous.

I did lose 12 pounds during my 6 month pre op program by trying some of the strategies taught in the class.

Some insurance do not require the 3/6 month deal if your BMI has been 40 & above consistently in the previous 2/3 years. If it's less than 40 u generally have the 3/6 month deal. It truly varies by insurance companies.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
