customademe 15 Posted November 2, 2016 Is there anyone else out there mourning the loss of their favorite food items? As we come into months of heavy eating, November thru New Years Day, I have found that I still miss the foods that not actually brought me to my condition, but just the idea of eating them in small quantities. I had my surgery 8/16/16 and have lost over 45 pounds with 75 more to reach my goal. I don't want to 'cheat' but I don't feel that having a sliver of a whopper or big mac or pizza, or FF would set me back to the start of my journey and yet, I mourn the fact that I no longer have a craving for these items but feel the loss of their presence in my life. I don't eat sweets of any kind and don't mourn that loss. It's just emptiness in the place where the craving for sugar dwelled. I used to enjoy eating and wonder if I ever will again. The pouch is so small that it really is a matter of just filling the hole and moving on to something else in my life. This is both a good and bad thing and those of you have had the surgery understand this 'honeymoon period'. Even foods that I have adapted to my soft foods list do not excite me. I just wondered if there were others who are going through or have passed this point to the otherside and can share their experiences.

Odie 249 Posted November 2, 2016 I may be different than most people. I eat whatever I want but in smaller quantities. I discovered I am lactose intolerant since my bypass, so I have given up ice cream but still use cream in my coffee. Also still use sour cream, eat cheese etc and put up with the gas or take an over the counter pill to deal with the lactose. It took me a year and a half to lose the weight but I also don't exercise!! If I decide to lose that extra 10 pounds then the exercise will give me the boost I need!! I had the surgery to improve my life and giving up all foods I enjoy is not quality of life as far as I am concerned. If I could stay away from all the foods that I love, then I would not have needed surgery!! My type 2 diabetes is gone and my cholesterol and blood pressure is now normal. I am 64 years old and am happy with my results and the 120 pounds I have lost so far!
rny100516 15 Posted November 3, 2016 How far out from surgery are you? I'm happy you were able to lose but it seems like an awful lot to put your body through to have not learned the lesson... Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App
Odie 249 Posted November 3, 2016 I am 2 years post surgery and have lost a total of 120 pounds. I don't overeat at all but do enjoy a bit of everything I love. Instead of a whole pizza, I now enjoy one slice!! Instead of 3 hamburgers I enjoy 1!! Was your comment about not learning a lesson meant for me?? I don't drink pop, I don't eat a lot of sweets and I don't overindulge!! Lesson learned!!
rny100516 15 Posted November 3, 2016 Oh okay! That all sounds very reasonable. I thought you meant that you were still eating the way you did prior to surgery. That's actually really awesome! It sounds like the "normal" that many of us long for. I hope to one day be able to enjoy the ocassional slice of pizza too! Odie 249 Posted November 4, 2016 I read all the time where people are really stringent about their diet after surgery and I just know that I would not be able to maintain that sort of lifestyle!! So I eat as normally as possible but only eat until I feel full, no matter how tasty something is!! lol I don't go to buffet's anymore because that would be a complete waste of money! I have no energy though and I am going to start walking as I have read, and heard, that getting more active will give me more energy! I'm also lucky in that, which the exception of my boobs, I don't have a lot of loose skin. In the province where I live, the government will pay for a patient who has lost over 100 pounds to have cosmetic surgery to get rid of the loose and excess skin. That does not apply to boobs though!! lol
rolosmom7 740 Posted November 4, 2016 We went to Wendy's last night. I had chili and my husband had a regular combo. I ate one of his fries and it wasn't that good to be honest. I also took a bite of sandwich (grilled chicken) minus the bread and could only taste pepper. Finished my chili just fine.

Since surgery I am lactose intolerant but I didn't realize that for a good bit. I love the fat on meats but I have to be careful now and usually just have one or two bites!! Sweets give me dumping problems. I used to love salty foods but cannot tolerate them now and don't even enjoy them!
MaryCatherine 173 Posted November 4, 2016 You can just eat a sliver of a Whopper now, but in a few months you will have no trouble getting a whole Whopper down. Your pouch will grow and you will be able to eat a lot. Because your body will malabsorb food, you will still lose weight and not have a regain problem until year three. The real test of weight loss surgery is keeping the weight off after year three. If you don't learn to eat differently now, you will regain at least half of the lost weight by year five.
