Attn: Catholics - Communion

Recommended Posts

I was just banded last Wednesday, and now that the weekend is here, I am curious. Obviously, since I am on Clear liquids at this point, I will not be able to take communion in the form of the host. Will I be able to do that eventually? Probably when I am back on solid food? Has anyone had any problems with this?

You can take communion NOW.....it dissolves in your mouth and will be nothing by the time it reaches your stomach. I had my surgery on a Thursday and received communion the following Sunday. No problems!

I'm not Catholic but I take communion every Sunday. Our communion is a bit more sturdy than the Catholic "wafers" that dissolve so easily -- it's more like a cracker. I've never had a problem.

Thanks for your responses. I was pretty sure the host would desolve, but wanted to make sure so that my first public PB wasn't during Mass.

That is wrong information. Whether or not it dissolves in your mouth has nothing to do with the reasoning behind the diet.

Surfbored, follow your doc's instructions completely! Communion wafers are a bread, they are hard and dry and yes, you can PB on them. But that isn't the whole reason for the post op diet anyway, there is much more behind it.

Catholics don't have to take communion if they have a medical reason and you do have a medical reason.

I did not give "wrong information". Catholic wafers dissolve into nothingness in your mouth; if you can swallow Water or spit, you can swallow communion. I have several banded Catholic friends, and no one has ever had a problem.

I think she is trying to let you know that you can not blanket everyone into 1 group, every band every person is different.

I am Lutheran and DID have a problem with the wafer at communion. IF you have any concerns you should actually run a "test" before mass. I ended up telling my Pastor about surgery after he thought I was choking.

The question was about Catholic communion wafers. They are not meant to be chewed, they are meant to be held in the mouth until they dissolve and are then swallowed. Again, if you can swallow Water or spit you can swallow this.

Oh, I am sorry I didn't know YOUR wafer was different than my dissovable wafer, for me the wafer itself caused my mouth to salivate and caused an instant pb. BUT of course I didn't know YOURS was different!

Yes, I am being sarcastic.....

We disagree. It's never wise to tell someone to go against their doc's instructions.

Wow, didn't know this subject could cause such sarcasm and "holier-than-thou" (pun intended) comments!!

I never told anyone to go against their doctor's advice. She never said her doctor told her not to take communion. She asked if anyone knew if she could take it, since she was on liquids. Since everyone I know was able to take communion at that stage, including myself, I gave her that info. And yes, communion IS different at different churches....didn't you read the other comments? Ours is meant to dissolve into nothingness before you swallow. If you can "take liquids", you can swallow spit! The communion is not a chunk of anything and is easily swallowed. Doesn't mean that no one, anywhere, could NEVER have a problem, but for most I know, there is none. I gave that info. What is the problem?

GEEEESH!!!!

Thanks to everyone for their input. I appreciate seeing both sides of the discussion. I think for saftey sake, I will wait until I am on mushies to take communion. Sorry if this question sparked hard feelings. I understand every situation is different.

It's all up to you. Like l8bloomer said and you should know, being catholic, that the wafer dissolves into nothing . In my opinion, a small wafer is not going to hurt you.

Then again you won't be committing a sin if you don't take it, Jesus knows how you feel about him.

My goodness. I am astounded that adults have such poor communication skills and so little regard for others' feelings that simple questions and posts degrade into this type of discussion. I feel like I should give some instructions -- like I do to my children -- on how and how NOT to phrase things to avoid riling people up. Just today, they fought over who got to drink out of the blue cup at lunch.

It's probably best to not call someone else's information "wrong". It might be better to simply say you disagree and state your reasons in a polite manner. No one likes to be told they're "wrong", especially when they might not be. An "in my experience" phrase does a lot to temper statements. Also, a "please ask your doctor if you need clarification" is better than "This is right and I'm sure your doctor would agree" (especially because he might not!).

surfbored, welcome to LBT, where tensions and tempers run so high that a simple question and a simple response can start a fight.
