2 days post op---trying to get in liquids

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I've been reading these posts since I was pre-op and never posted anything. I admire all that everyone is doing and the progress being made. But I had surgery on Oct 26 and now I need help. I am having trouble drinking 6oz of Water an hour. I am still on Clear Liquids. I drink small sips but when the Water hits my stomach, IT HURTS. Well I guess it feels more like water hitting hot grease in my stomach. It kind of sizzles. It goes away in a min or so, but that's my biggest issue right now and I'm afraid I'm going to end up back in the hospital for dehydration. I'd appreciate any help you all can provide. I've really been looking forward to this surgery and now I'm second guessing my decision. I'm just uncertain on what to do.

Thank you.

Did they put you on a PPI - proton pump inhibitor like prilosec or protonix??

They gave me some in the hospital, but only sent me home with pain meds and Zofran. Do you think one of those would help?

Yes !! They sent me home with protonix for a month saying it's common to have reflux and it prevents stricture ... it sounds like you need it!! You might not have to stay on it forever but maybe for a while until your stomach heals and adjusts

A PPI does not help prevent a stricture - I know, I have one.

It is necessary, however, to help reduce the acid production in your new tiny tummy so make sure you get on one ASAP.

Acid is unlikely the cause of your distaste for Water right now, though. That's fairly common. I'm still there 3.5 years out. Have you tried different temps? Adding a SF flavor? Sometimes you simply need to change the pH level of the Water to make it easier to swallow. I drank Gatorade mixed with water 50/50 for my first 3 months with approval from my surgeon. It was the only way I could get it down.

I also couldn't do Water the first 3 days post op but everyday it got better. I am now post op day 8 (first day of pureed food..yay) sf crystal light at room temperature and warm broth got me through those first few days. As for me the issue with H2o dissipated with my swelling

Thank you Joy and Kristen. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only person that's had issues with this. I was so frustrated trying to figure out how to make this happen. And how other people have been successful with it because obviously people were. I really appreciate all of you for responding. It's great having a support system of people that care enough to help even if we don't know each other.

Today seems a little better so I'm hoping each day does get easier. The last few days I was wondering what the heck I did to myself. Haha! But one day I'm sure I'll realize it was all worth it.

I had the same problem. I ended up back in hospital because I couldn't manage but it got better from there. Try warm fluids - they were better than cold and it all settled quite quickly from about 96hrs post op (or even a bit earlier) and then was fine.

Guidelines here are for a PPI for 6 weeks post op sleeve then can stop unless you have symptoms.

Good luck.

Thank you gl12282. I've been sticking to warm and room temp drinks the last few days. I'm actually afraid to try cold again for fear of the pain. Maybe in a few months. :) I'm glad to hear that things do eventually get better.

Well done shaychelle. Glad it's settled but you could probably try cold liquids now. Mine really didn't take long to settle. Once the cramps had gone completely with warm fluids they were much better already with cold. It will get better though :-).

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
