Exercise after surgery

Recommended Posts

Walking was immediate, but the Dr. said to wait six weeks for anything more strenuous to prevent hernias or tears.

I have been walking 2 miles a day since the end of the first week post-op. I am going to try to add in another mile this next week and see how it goes. My doctor said to wait 6-8 weeks to do anything more strenuous than walking.

I started the gym at 3 weeks, just cardio like the Elliptical.

I was cleared at 4 weeks to do as tolerated. I am running in a 5k tomorrow just about 6 weeks out. Totally not prepared as I thought I would be between bad weather and plain old bad lazy tired days

Started couch to 5k at six weeks. Ran a 5k 5 months out, half marathon at 10 months and a full marathon at a year and a half!

I'm seven months out and doing a 15 k in the morning. Signed up originally for the 5k but I run 10-12 miles at a time and wanted to push it. Some days I'll do the 12miles in the am and do another 5 later on.

Hoping to finish, but just doing it will be enough for now. Had a tummy bug earlier today kind of freaked me out, but now I'm wondering if it wasn't nerves. I have the most amazing person giving me the moral support I need, which helps tons.

As for right after surgery? Was walking a ton by 1 week, at the gym by 2 weeks, weights at 4 weeks and have not looked back since.

Morning after surgery I asked the doc when I could go back to lifting weights and he said, as soon as you want to.

I proceeded to go home and sleep for three weeks. (Not really, but close enough.)

Once I did get back into it, I found there were things I couldn't do: Swiss ball sit ups caused a sharp pain, so did the leg lifts (on the machine that looks like it should be in the film "Alien.") So I waited a few more weeks to do those and now it's all good.

I am very impressed with those walking. It has been five days and i can barely move. I am just now able to walk around house. I guess i am disappointed in myself for being so weak

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
