Surgery was yesterday

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery around noon yesterday. Everything went really smoothly; my gall bladder was also removed. I woke up and didn't realize for a minute I had actually had surgery. I didn't feel much pain at all. In about 30mins though a bout of nausea took hold. I spit up just a little. I also had relatively mild gas pains and took a gasx strip, which worked wonders. My friend had the nurses bring me nausea medicine (the nurses said they didn't have my orders so I didn't get anything but I've and pain meds until after 9). Now that the nausea has subsided I feel pretty good. I took another gasx strip just to head and possible gas off since I've read on this board how horrible that can be. So far so good... Very little pain and I can walk around just fine. All in all it's been pretty a good experience for me.

Happy for you. Im 4 days post op and still have a lot of pressure from hernia repair. Also have a lot of blurred vision and vertigo. Hope you avoid all those things and have a mild time of it

Yes the mental part is hard. I know this sounds crazy but I would forget and grab a nibble of food like a piece of fried potato. Of course it didnt go down but it was just a habit to try any food that was around. I did this several times and paid dearly. Food obsession is real. Even though I wasnt hungry i missed the taste of food and spices.

I finally got released from the hospital this afternoon. I had extreme nausea but virtually zero gas pain. They had to switch me off morphine and onto some other pain killer and then gave me this ridiculous nausea medicine called reglan. It was the worst thing I've ever experienced. I wasn't allowed to even have ice chips until late Saturday night (surgery was noon Thursday).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
