Yes I had my surgery back in January2016 and for the first 6 months I was getting a cold sore every other week, now it's about once a month. Not sure what is causing it tho.

Are you male or female? Sorry could not see on ur profile

Do u feel it could be hormonal?

Or perhaps from the change in diet? Less fruit and veg...

I'd love to pin point a trigger so I could try to prevent it.

Thanks

Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus. More than likely your body and immune system is stressed from surgery and weightloss and is having a hard time keeping the virus suppressed. A good part of our immune system is located in our GI tract which was just violently disrupted, to say the least. Good nutrition will help get you back on track. You may try taking lysine for awhile....500mg/day. It can help slow the replication of the herpes virus. There are also OTC topicals that won't necessarily get rid of them, but will help with the discomfort until they are gone.

I am a female, 53 years old, and I have lost 118 pounds. I think that the cold sores are caused by the stress of the surgery to the body. Since I was getting them so frequently I talked to my doctor about them and he prescribed Veltrex and I take it when I feel one coming and then it stops it in its tracks. The medicine has been very helpful.

Thanks that's helpful to know Dairymary. I definitely hadn't thought about it like that.

Sickandtired Did ur surgeon prescribe u veltex or ur regular dr? I didn't know such a drug existed. But if it can stop it in its tracks I want it.

I never get a tingle. Normally I notice my lip looks pinker in one spot only. At that point I immediately start using cream and take some lysine but with a few hours it has surfaced in a raised blister. They normally clear within 5-7 days.

Once they surface I use compeed to treat them. I like knowing they are covered. They are like a little special clear sticker u put on them.

The one I have at present is definitely the largest I've ever had.

Cold sores make me feel very self conscious and embarrassed- so I hope I can get it sorted.

Thanks so much for your replies

My regular Dr gave me the Veltrex. If you catch it before it comes out it never does. Lysine just doesn't seem to help me so I had to find something that really works.

Valtrex? I remember those commercials for herpes lol

I have gotten cold sores all my life. Some infected sob probably kissed me as a little kid. I wish there was a cure. I always get them around season changes.

I have been getting them all my life as well and valtrex is the answer. Why suffer when you don't have too? On the onset on a cold sore I take 2 pills and I always ice the spot on my lip as well. Then take 2 more 12 hours later and it is gone!

I get the worst fever blisters my doc has ever seen and an allergic to valtrex. I take lysine every day and ramp up the amount if I feel the tingle. I also have a lysine ointment I use alternating with one that has benzalkonium (Releeve) to shorten outbreaks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
