Psychological evaluation

Recommended Posts

It's not bad at all. They ask about eating habits, depression and anxiety, social history, previous diet attempts, support systems, etc. Just be honest and take advantage of any advice given.

I dreaded my psych appointment but...it is a great thing!! They are trying to make sure that your mind is in the right place. I can say from my own experience if the WLS does NOT fix our minds. The surgery is a tool to help us make our goals. Surgery DOES NOT FIX the mind that takes big work on our part!! The physical part is the easy part. But...I have to deal with mind hunger every single day!! If you aren't truthful at your psych eval it can be very hard on you. Good Luck

I talked to the psychologist for about an hour and then I had to take this really long inventory assessment that took me about an hour or so. It wasn't bad. I was in the throws of my six-month pre-op diet, and I had my head in the game. She just helped me to cement it there.

I actually enjoyed it...

It is so funny how almost everyone is afraid of the psych eval. All they are trying to determine is if you have a support network, if you can understand what the surgery is about and if you possibly require help due to having a food addiction. Mine was about 20 minutes and was a breeze.

It is hard to be judged. The exam Is to Also evaluate if you can stick to a plan? Are your goals realistic? I did not have the psychological exam as I self paid but oddly perform them routinely in my practice.

So the psych eval isnt to hurt us. Cuz i suffer from depression amd anxiety. And take meds for it as well

No, not at all!! The eval is there to determine what support you'll need to be successful in the long-term. Maintenance is tough if you don't have the psychological tools to go with the physical ones. You don't want to go through all this and then re-gain it all back.

Be open, and honest. They've heard it all before and their experience can be of great help to you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
