3 weeks out, food volume?

Recommended Posts

So I'm almost 3 weeks out and got to switch from full liquid diet to purees. I'm feeling a little paranoid reading how little some people eat, like only a couple of bites??? I pureed some roasted cauliflower for a mashed potato substitute and can eat about 1/2 cup before getting full signals. Is this unusual? It's a lot less than a pre-sleeve meal, so I'm thankful, but it seems others have more restriction.

1. Don't rely on "full signals". Stick to measurements suggested on your plan. On purees, my guideline was 2oz.

2. Focus on Protein - while cauliflower is better than potatoes carb-wise, you still aren't really getting any protein and pureed cauliflower probably won't have you feeling as sated as a protein based puree will. I know the idea of pureed meat can be off-putting. For me, the idea of pureed chicken salad or tuna salad was a little easier than the thought of just pureeing meat and stock. So my go to's were chicken or a pouch of tuna or a pouch of salmon pureed with a little nonfat plain greek yogurt - the flavored tuna and salmon pouches were great for this!

That's how I felt when I first started the purée as well and then suddenly it changed! Now I can eat a few spoonfuls and I am done!!! It may just be that the swelling has not gone down yet.

At that point, we were directed to eat 1/4 to 1/3 cup per meal. 5-6 meals per day.

Thanks for the info. I don't think I was given volume amts for each stage, but it's possible I've forgotten in the whirlwind of new info.

Thank you for that reminder. I think I will try pureed chicken salad tomorrow like you suggested. I like salmon, so that's an option too, as well as egg salad. Probably better protein -wise than the Beans and cauliflower I've been eating. Still supplementing with shakes to meet protein goals.

I'm 3 weeks plus out and my swelling hasn't completely gone. Does anyone know when the swelling goes?

What do u mean by swelling ?! . I just went day 10 to remove stitches didn't say anything . Im week 3 now starting purée .

When I mentioned it above I was referring to the swelling in my stomach. After the operation my surgeon told me that it was swollen but it would go down, and my stomach would only hold 2-3 ounces once that swelling was down. I can feel it because I can only take a couple bites and I am FULL!

I am just switching over to the mush diet as well, however I was told to eat fish for the PROTIEN and I can try some mashed potatoes just for the feeling of some sort of mental satisfaction. I took 4 small forks of potatoes and that's all I could do. Heck I get full on my PROTIEN shakes and Vitamins oh and yea Water

When I was on the puréed stage and I had mashed potatoes, I added unflavored Protein Powder to it to make it more worth while. Helped boost that number some.

I made a chicken salad yesterday that turned out surprisingly palatable. I used a can of chicken, a scoop of non-fat, plain Greek yogurt, a few pecans and raisins. A few seconds in the vita - mix blender and it was done. It was good! I ate it plain. Would have been great on crackers, but I'm sticking to my plan of purees only.

I'm almost in soft foods stage. Im also having issues knowing when full sometimes but i usually try to measure as well as i can. I don't have a food scale or many measuring cups or spoons so is hard for me. How long generally does one have to measure? Like at what point is it not absolutely necessary? I know a lot of people measure food forever but i don't see myself being one of those people. I have a history of going overboard and becoming obsessive when it comes to things like that.

I got a little freaked out the first couple of weeks because I could eat more than 2oz. But now I feel way more restriction, I think maybe it's cause the nerves are more healed and therefor the full signals are sharper or more obvious. Sometimes if I eat too fast I won't feel it right away but when i finally do I'll feel extremely stuffed and uncomfortable so that's something I need to work on.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
