Bufflehead 6,358 Posted October 27, 2016 Get a copy of your "plan document" or "member benefit handbook" -- the part that addresses bariatric surgery coverage -- and make an initial appointment with your surgeon (you mention a doctor but I am not sure whether you mean your bariatic surgeon you want to use or a primary care provider). this sucks 557 Posted October 27, 2016 Research, research, research. This is one the biggest decisions you will make in your lifetime so make sure you spend a lot of time learning about the different types of surgeries, pros/cons of each, possible risks/complications. Babbs 14,681 Posted October 27, 2016 If you're going through insurance, there won't be anythung 'speedy" about the process. They will more than likely have some hoops you'll have to jump through, which can take many months sometimes. Don't worry about sagging stuff. You'll feel so fabulous, it's not going to matter much. Besides, that's what surgery or good Shapewear is for.
chobits81 9 Posted October 27, 2016 Thank you yeah I heard might take months but do I start off at my own doctor and get referrals etc very true Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
bigjake_35 19 Posted October 27, 2016 You will probably need a referral from your primary care physician but look and see if your surgeon has any kind of informational event they want you to attend to kick off the process you should be able to get in to one soon and they will set you up with everything you need to do Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

CarenL 35 Posted October 28, 2016 My insurance required 6 months of weigh ins, nutrition evaluation, psychologist eval and blood test for stomach bacteria. I recommend you continually stay in touch with both dr office and insurance. I found out after doing all the requirements and dr submitting surgery date that my insurance required I enroll in the Bariatric Resource Services program they had! I had no idea about this requirement. It delayed my surgery almost 4 weeks. . I am happy to say I had my sleeve surgery on 10/20 and doing fine so far. Stay on top of your insurance company!! Best of luck!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
