I am 51 years old, highest weight 410 weight at surgery 364. Had gastric sleeve at Kaiser. Was released day after surgery with only 22 hours of IV and pain pump. First night and first day home was tough. Severe vomiting reaction to tiny sips of Water or meds. Worst reaction is to the liquid norco pain killer. Also taking Pepcid mylanta chews and odansetron 8mg for nausea or vomiting but does not seem to help. No where near 64 oz of Water today and zero Protein shakes. Help.

It was pretty hard to get the Water down the first couple of days for me, too...in fact I don't think it was until day 6 or 7 that I was getting between 50-60oz down a day (that included Protein shakes). You've got a lot of inflammation, it sounds like. Overnight and release the next day is pretty standard with sleeve, unless they feel you have serious complications - but that means a leak in the staple line or something like that.

The Protein shakes count toward Water, so what I would focus on is just working on Protein Shakes all day long. Not straight water. Small sips and give yourself a break between them. SMALL sips. Like, 1/8th of your mouthful. Take a sip every couple minutes. If it makes your stomach hurt, you're doing it too often. You just have to take it real easy and real slow, because your stomach has suffered a HUGE trauma, during this surgery. You will heal MUCH more quickly if you are getting sufficient Protein, so make that your focus with every single drink you take every day. That's THE MOST important thing, this week. Protein. Also...when you feel tired, sleep. That's when your body repairs itself.

Also, if the Norco is bothering you, see if you can get a prescription for Tylenol with Codeine in liquid form, if you can. Might be easier for you to use.

Other than all that...walk. Walk as much as you can, to get the surgical gas out. You'll feel a lot better.

End of day 3 post op, still hard but much better, got off pain meds, made me want to vomit just looking at bottle. Had my niece put it away so I can't see it. The medicine for Nausea and vomiting is sickening sweet. Trying to put in my mouth with Protein shake crushed ice mix. Increased Water a lot but still no where near 64 ounces, Protein Shake maybe 6 ounces today. Thinking about getting IV to catch up on fluids.

I am4years out and still can't drink 64 oz. I just carry Water with me at all times. And I hate eating. That was always my vice but now I go days without eating. Lean shakes from GNC are good. I have to mix half with milk because I don't like sweets. It will take some time to adjust.

Hi Bill0565,

I am 3 days post op and have had the exact same issues you mentioned. My doc wanted me to have 6oz of liquid every hour and I just laughed because there was no way. I actually had to stay in the hospital an extra day longer than normal because my Fluid intake wasn't enough and I was so nauseated. I was way too nauseous and it hurt way too much to drink. However today was the first day I could start drinking a little more. It does seem to improve with each day. I'm still on Clear liquids for another week so no Protein shakes for me yet, but I can have Protein Water.

We can do it!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
