Tierra T Tij 56 Posted October 26, 2016 So, I've talked with Bariatric Pal MX one day and was feeling excited to try to be able to get the roux e y Gastric Bypass. But then happiness turned to sadness when I asked my family members if either of them could go with me to Mexico. They were like "no you shouldn't go, it's dangerous in Mexico that's like going to Iraq for your surgery." My grandmother, friend, and primary care doctor all agree that I don't need surgery. I REALLY wish somebody was on my side because it's hard going through all this without nobody to be a support.I just want to cry. I'm 5'4 and weigh 280.2 with a frame in between small and medium but I have small feet and hands. It's like I lose weight and gain weight VERY quickly and i'm tired of it. I feel like NOBODY wants to listen to my reasons of why I REALLY want weight loss surgery. I've been at this for more than 10 plus years of trying lose weight because I've been unsuccessful in EVERY single diet I have did, including the current diet I'm on only with just curbing my appetite and doing a lot of exercise. The main reason I want weight loss surgery so I could get my foot fixed because I've been having problems with it from a prior injury and want to be thinner to make sure I don't injure myself again after my foot surgery. I REALLY wish somebody would care and I just feel so alone in this.

BigViffer 3,544 Posted October 26, 2016 Just curious, which one of these people you have talked to will be paying for your surgery? Oh, they won't be will they? Then their opinions doesn't really mean much. Comparing Mexico to Iraq is just ridiculous.
KristenLe 5,979 Posted October 26, 2016 Your BMI is high enough to qualify for surgery. Losing weight and keeping it off is extremely difficult. I encourage you to explain the health complications that come along with morbid obesity. If you weigh 280 - you have more than 100 lbs to lose. That's not exactly "not needing surgery". heidikat72 935 Posted October 26, 2016 A BMI of 47.5 more than qualifies you for surgery and it is much better to deal with obesity now before you get a lot of obesity related health issues. You don't want to do like I did and wait until I had almost uncontrollable high blood pressure, excruciating joint and spine pain and greatly reduced mobility. I doubt your family would want those things for you either. At the end of the day, this is a personal decision between you and your surgeon. While I had my surgery in the states since my insurance would cover it, from what I've read on here the program that bariatric pal helps coordinate in Mexico is quite good and there are a lot of people on here who have used it. I do agree it would be best to have someone travel with you - not because it is mexico but just in general traveling a distance for surgery by yourself would be hard but not undoable. I've very surprised your primary doc says surgery is unnecessary at your BMI. But why does your family say that? Have you discussed with them the impact of obesity on your life? As well as the impact of years of yo-yoing weight loss and weight gain? And lastly - you are not alone - everyone here understands and supports you.
hudjess 95 Posted October 26, 2016 GIRL! You don't need anyone, you are doing this for yourself. Surround yourself with positive people! Good luck to you!
Travelher 915 Posted October 26, 2016 I am also shocked that your GP said you don't need it. Mine was almost giddy when i told her I was getting it and I had a BMI of about 42 at the time. She went down the list of things on my blood work etc and it was basically....this will be fixed after surgery...and this will be fixed after surgery ...and this should get better etc. As for family...I think that is coming from a place of fear and worry. Hopefully they will come around. You are doing this for your health. I for one, want to be around to see my 7 year old get married, have kids etc. etc.
FunkyMunkyBrat 205 Posted October 26, 2016 Do they think that no you don't need surgery or just don't want you to go to Mexico to do it? Do you not have insurance to have it covered here or do you just not want to have to wait to have it done here? .. There are too many variables n unknowns for me to say.. Just go ahead and do it.. I will say if you feel like this is the only way you can do it and you're the one paying for it then it's no one else business but yours. I hope it works out for you.. Good luck! Nursenia 68 Posted October 26, 2016 Girl do what you want with YOUR body and as for support I don't have none either my dad and brother did come to the hospital while I was in surgery but after that I was on my own and been on my own since......Yes my surgery was done here only because my insurance paid for it if they would have denied me off to Mexico I would have went solo not sure if that's your issue or not just saying. Good luck!!! Sent from my SM-G900T1 using the BariatricPal App

KeepCalm 223 Posted October 26, 2016 I'd go with you - but we're kinda far from each other... even though mexico borders both of our states We're the same height and I weighed about 260 when I decided on the sleeve.
shedo82773 1,236 Posted October 26, 2016 Don't let anyone or anything stand in your way of your health and happiness!! It is a personal choice. And you will be the one that has to do it yourself. I would at least try to convince someone to go with you to Mexico tho. Not because it can't be done alone but because you will just need someone to get the items you need. My hubby had his Sleeve in June. We went a day early and stayed a day later in a Motel just in case. I had to go get him broth and juice. When you return on your flight call ahead and tell them you need assistance to get around. They are wonderful and will have a wheelchair to take you in. You won't have to stand around for customs or have to wait to board your airplane. The surgeon he had was good but....their customs in Juarez, Mexico no way near as great as the US. I have heard great things about Tijuana, Mexico. And as was said earlier BARIATRIC PAL has great programs. Good Luck in whatever you decide you want to do!!! highfunctioningfatman 2,675 Posted October 26, 2016 Don't worry about Mexico. No additional organs were harvested from me and we were treated like family. Better care there than anything we have received in the states. I'm more willing to go back there and have surgery than to get a flu shot here.
Djmohr 6,965 Posted October 26, 2016 Does your insurance not cover surgery here in the states? I ask because it would help you and your family to understand why bariatric surgery is necessary. Many times they dont get that not having the surgery could be even more dangerous than having it. Obesity is a metabolic disease that if treated properly can be cured. I know it was very important for my husband to go with me to my second appointment so that he understood why it was most critical. I had to take the time with my grown boys to also help them understand that without surgery I would likely fail to keep the weight off after losing it. Just take some time with them and help them understand your reasons for having surgery. As far as Mexico goes, that is a personal decision and I dont believe it is like Iraq for petes sake. That being said, for follow up reasons if you can have your surgery here in the US the better off you are. Just my opinion!
