I don't feel full....

Recommended Posts

I am 3 weeks post op and I do not have any triggers that I am full. I could keep eating and eating and it is almost as if I never had the surgery. Do any of you have any tips or tricks?

When you get to solids, you will feel it. liquids, some purees go right through.

Doh. I just realized this was a Bypass question. Sorry! Is full the same as the sleeve? I get pressure near my esophagus, and my nose starts running like crazy or I try to burp and I can't. I measure everything too because one bite too many is horrible. >.<

Right now, the nerves in your stomach have only recently been severed and will need time and care to heal. You won't feel full during this time, as most people don't. There are some people who never actually feel that super-full feeling at any stage post-op, which is why it's so important to measure and be very aware of how much you eat. The difference now is the lack or great reduction in hunger, and that's what you need to use to your advantage. :) My surgeon always says "if you're always going to eat until you feel full, you'e always going to be cultivating the very habits that contributed to obesity in the first place." Eating til we were full before meant we ate until our stomachs were stretched to max capacity (somewhere around a football in size) and eating until we're full now just means we've hit the limit of our tiny stomachs and are now starting to fill our esophagus, but not necessarily that we've eaten enough for a meal, which is why we have to eat so slowly and measure portions. You could eat slow enough to get around the sleeve/bypass and be eating all day; nothing is stopping the food from passing through your stomach after a short time. Measuring and sticking with that amount regardless of fullness is key!

The trick in the beginning is to follow by measurement and go no further. Once you get to more solid foods you will get a better understanding and even indicators like a hiccup or a sneeze.

Feeling full post op WLS is completely different than how you felt before surgery and it will take some getting used to.

I would also say just because you can eat and eat does not mean you should. For RNY, you can literally cause yourself to vomit if you eat too much.

I measure everything and portion out my meals. I've bought a bunch more small containers for this..some of them have helpful measurements on the side (1/4 cup etc). I'm keeping my meals between 1/2 and 3/4 cups of food. I'm in my 4th week. I do get full and if I feel full I stop even if I'm not done my portion. I didn't feel any restriction while still on full fluids, but still measured.

Wow...thank you all! It makes sense now. I'll measure out my foods. I'm on mushy stuff right now.

Hi,

I am five days post op from gastric bypass and I don't feel any restrictions either...I had the sleeve two years ago and it was the exact opposite which kinda makes me worry. After reading more and more I guess this is normal while on liquids. I was just now able to finish one cup of a Protein shake and I feel satisfied. I also gained four pounds since my surgery. I guess in time it gets better. Feeling a little frustrated though.

It's not at all unusual that you wouldn't feel full on liquids. It's also common to gain weight with surgery - with the IVs and swelling.

I'm hoping by Monday the weight should start to go down which will be one week post op. Thank you.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
