Gallbladder out AND LaPband at the same time?

Recommended Posts

Anyone have this problem? Was told today my gallbladder is borderline and the doc may remove it but if he does have to, then he won't do the lap band at the same time because it will/can cause an infection and then he'd have to go back in and remove my lap band anyway! I am very upset!! AND to top it all off, I won't know until I wake up. *sniff-cry*:cry:cry

Anyone had anything similar??? Anyone had both out at the same time?? Any percentages of infection? Geez. I'm set to have my surgery this Monday morning. So I need info fast. :help:

I don't know if this helps, but I have to get my galbadder taken out too. My doctor told me that it would be a separate surgery. I'm having my galbadder surgery sept. 12, I having the lap-band surgery sept. 18. My doctor told be that there is a small chance of contaminating the band if you take the galbadder out at the same time. I am really scared about having 2 surgeries! Hope everything goes well for you.

There is no reason why they cant do both of these surgeries at once. Get a second opinion.

Undergoing 2 laparoscopies in one week is just crazy when they could do it at the same time. Most surgeons wouldnt do that...def get a second opinion

I had my gallbladder out at the same time as the lapband was installed. They went from different sides of the body to prevent contamination. I also had my hiatal hernia fixed at the same time. I was a self-pay patient due to insurance denial and having the gall bladder done reduced the amount I needed to pay in half, doctor suggested it since I was already diagnosed with diseased gallbladder years ago. I didn't have any problems with an infection at all. I have been post op 2 weeks and 2 days and feel great. Didn't realize how many problems would be resolved by the gall bladder removal and hiatal hernia being fixed. I feel great.

I had my galbladder out a week ago and will have the band in two weeks. My doc made me wait because of the risk of infection. I would rather wait and not deal with infection.

It is surgeon's choice and comfort level that guides them whether to do GB removal and Band placement at the same time. To some it may seem crazy, but I do understand both sides. If your GB is really inflamed and you have a lot of stones, they may not want to take a chance of a fragile, friable GB tearing opwn and spilling out into the surgical field where the band either is going, or was just placed. Then again, of the scan isn't terrible and your GB isn't that inflamed, then I can see it coming out at the same time. I'd personally rather wait and not risk a nasty sepsis (infection), abdominal infections are NOTHING to mess with.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A. Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
