What do you eat after 8 weeks?

Recommended Posts

So I finally got my date today and will be sleeved on Nov 21, but as I'm looking through my folder of all my information I'm noticing that there are no guidelines of what to eat after 8 weeks just that I can return to regular food. Suddenly with my approval I am panicked and full of questions in spite of all my research. My program had a few nuts but they teach classes they are not individual nuts for appointments. So now I feel like I don't really know anything, like what should I be eating after 8 weeks, what should my calories be and when should I up them and how much. I feel so lost now, and I thought I was doing so good by preparing myself, any help would be much appreciated.

I'm approaching 8 weeks but I was cleared at week 5 for all foods as long as I can tolerate it. Many here are on low carb diets, less than 30 carbs. I'm on a moderate carb for now (I switch every now and then), ~60 carbs. My surgeon's program says 900-1200 calories, 60 carbs. It seems all programs are different, I'm sure you'll get a lot of different diets from everyone here hehe.

You will wade into it, don't worry. You'll start on liquids only for a couple weeks, then they'll gradually work you into more solid food, until after about 6 or 8 weeks (varies by surgeon and patient) you'll be left to your own devices. But in that six week period, you'll start seeing where your priorities need to be with the food, and how small your stomach's capacity is. So you'll be better equipped to make appropriate choices.

Basically, you're going to discover that breads, rice and Pasta are not a priority because they swell up in your stomach and don't leave room for Protein...and Protein is your biggest priority. You focus on that first, every meal. You'll probably focus on complex carbohydrates that aren't super filling, like the breads are. Beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc...

Let's just say that if you've got yourself squared away mentally, you won't be thinking it's time for a burger and fries. You don't have the space in your stomach, and you will have new priorities when it comes to food. These are good changes.

Don't panic, it doesn't happen all at once. Let yourself get used to the changes. Also, you probably aren't going to have to worry too terribly much about calories until you get closer to your goal weight. The sleeve is so restrictive that you probably will struggle to exceed 500 calories a day for quite a while...and that means if you are doing a reasonable amount of cardio, you're going to be in a steep calorie deficit. Unless you start drinking a bunch of sugar drinks all day and whatnot.

I will be 6 weeks on Thursday and so far so good. I do make my priority to eat the Protein first, sometimes I don't finish the Protein because I am full already. Usually I eat chicken (I prefer dark meat because is tender), deli ham, deli turkey, cheese, ground beef, shredded beef, eggs. Also, you know what has been really good for me, sashimi, I eat 3 slices of the salmon only (no rice) dip it in soy souce and it's so goooood! But all these are recommendation from my NUT which I have been following to the T. Thankfully I haven't vomited or had dumping yet. But I do notice when I have ate too much (an extra spoon when I shouldn't), I need to walk walk walk. You will find interesting what you crave and you don't longer crave. Also, I drink a lot of Water, and very rarely I drink juice or hot tea. Good luck in your journey ????

Yeah, you really have to make a conscious decision to stay away from the foods that you know were triggers to overeating, and chips are one of them. Pure carb and fat calories, very little nutritional value and it's impossible to stop, once you start. So it's a little like being a recovering alcoholic...those things that you know have been triggers for you, you just have to give them up...because they will trigger relapses.

That is great advice. I havent had any Pasta, bread or rice in 2yrs. And i really dont miss them. I havent had any craving except for lays potatoe chips....cant eat just 1. I really want some chips but i keep getting some smoothie and keep going.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
