So many biased one sided opinions on here...

Recommended Posts

Kind of venting... Don't get me wrong I have learned so many helpful things because of this site on my journey but I have noticed as well how many biased opinions regarding what to do and what not to do post op as well...

Sorry but every person is different. Some people have comorbidities or other circumstance that the typical "black and white cookie cutter" guide to the sleeve diet post op does not fit all. And that doesn't mean your doing something wrong.

If you have a competent surgeon and knowledgeable dietician follow their plan, be smart/make good choices and results will follow. It's frustrating to see people on here bring posters down by challenging them on their choices. This site shouldn't be a substitute for a doctor or dietician. If in doubt reach out to your team :)

Kidney patients especially for one shouldn't be getting loads and loads of Protein in. And diabetics can probably benefit from having a small serving of a whole grain at Breakfast to stabilize blood sugars through the day. But also I'm not anyone's doctor on here so don't take my advice either

Bottom line is I just keep seeing advice on here that could do more damage than good especially not knowing their history. Anyways that's the end of my rant. Just because someone might not be following what worked for someone else absolutely does not mean they're doing something wrong.

*disclaimer* this post is not defending those who have pizza, fried chicken, bread, alcohol days and weeks post op! Haha!

I agree with you I read one post I was like omg back off the person. Because that had chicken at 5 days. Each their own. Granted chicken sounds amazing I'm full off of a string cheese but I agree go with your team but you know your body as well too. I drank 40 oz of Protein walked 5 miles day after surgery other barely walking

My favorite advice is call your surgeon because we are not doctors. I do know to say don't eat a taco one week post sleeve. We do the best we can, shaming and ridicule here is ridiculous and rampant. I might give advice but I always end it with good luck or best wishes.

Dr plans vary too. I was on Clear liquids other that shakes 2 weeks pre but full liquids day I left hospital and softs including chicken if tolerated and tuna after week 1. Reading some posts had me scared.

There are so many people from different countries, different surgeons, different eating plans. If people filled out their stats it is easier to give help, because for instance in Australia or U.K. They do not have the products we have. Please fill out your information.,

But who's fault is that? So many posters come on here, asking questions that they should be asking their surgeons. They are the ones seeking medical advice from strangers on an Internet forum. It's fine to ask about other people's experiences and opinions but they should not be asking what THEY should be doing. Unfortunately they do.

I completely agree that post WLS is not a one size fits all formula. Everyone needs to find what works for them, under their doctor's supervision. In my responses I try to stick with describing my own experience, but make it clear that it may not work for everyone. No one on here is qualified to tell any other patient how to proceed with their diet and excercise programs so it's the people asking for advice that need to realize the responses are indeed, opinions and individual anecdotes, not medical facts.

@@Dairymary Very well said. I do things/eat things that aren't on plan for me, but I'd never advise anyone else to do same or give them the 'permission' so many seem to be looking for when they come here with a chicken bone hanging out of their mouth on day 5.

I continue to be blown away by the number of people who have seemingly had little to no education as to what this surgery entails both physically and emotionally. If you're eating fried chicken on day 5, you have no bloody idea what just happened to your body.

MY POINT EXACTLY. We are not doctors. Call your doctors. Quit saying "HELP I am dying". If you are dying go to the ER or call Rescue.

I try to give my disclamer...I'm not a doctor. I'm not promoting products and talking from own experience with Wls. I'm ignoring many posts that are pointless arguments. I have had great support by most members here. I choose to ignore and not invest my time into the negative.

I am amazed at our precious friends who ask us to validate their problems. There is no one here who is a PHYSICIAN. Trust your gut instincts always. Please.

Actually it was my "gut" instincts that got me into so much trouble with my weight in the first place ;). It was trusting my surgeon, doctor's and therapist's advice that got me where I am today. That, along with the comraderie and encouragement (not medical advice) from my support group.

What bothers me is serious medical issues that a surgeon naeeds to assess, not our eating habits and getting fat. I cringe when someone asks serious medical questions here. Support groups are not doctors either.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
