My insurance won't cover WLS. Is there anyone that had their surgery performed in Mexico and has any advise for self pay? I've done LOTS of research but would like to know if I'm crazy for considering another country.

I just got my approval for Dr. Fernando Garcia. I work in the Medical field and many (10) of my colleagues have had a successful experience with no complications. I too am self pay and was not about to fork over $15,000.00 + to get it done here in the states.

Hope this helps!!

Do you mind me asking what procedure you plan on doing? I guess I would just say that i caution you against getting the band in Mexico.. from what I have read and seen first hand, it is extremely difficult to find someone in the US to accept you to adjust it. And you will require adjustment for success. If that's your preferred route you might want to make sure someone local is willing to accept you post surgery.

Why are you not considering the sleeve?

I have Gerd/reflux so the sleeve is not the wisest choice. Plus after all my research and going over pros and cons of both options bypass was what I wanted.

Oh ok, just wondering. I am just starting my journey hopefully I'll be approved through insurance here, if not going to dr. Fernando Garcia too. I've read great reviews from him too. Dr. Ortiz also has great review but is a couple thousand more, but he has also trained surgeons in the US for the sleeve.

Just wondering why your insurance denied you. I am just starting and would hate to go through all the work just to be denied too.

Its a choice made by the company my husband works for. It makes insurance prices more manageable for employees when WLS is not a coverage. At least that's what they told me when I called.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
