Weight Lost Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

I just come from my second surgery consult with a different surgeon. I wanted to check out a couple different surgeons before making a decision about who I wanted go with for surgery. I have a high BMI and want to loose at least 50 pounds before my surgery. I was curious to know how much weight others lost before surgery. My insurance and doctor don't have a requirement.

I had an extremely high BMI so didn't have a requirement to lose weight. It was a challenge for me just to maintain my weight. Also, I carry most of my weight on my lower body so my abdomen wasn't quite as far as my BMI might indicate. It can make a difference where you carry your fat.

That said, if you work with your NUT and start making small changes now you should see some weight loss.

Just drinking more Water is a great first step.

I weaned myself off of carbonation and caffeine and focused on upping my Water.< /p>

I added more non-starchy vegetables and fresh fruit, and started focusing on Protein.

I tracked my food. I had been following Weight Watchers online pre-op so my NUT had me continue doing so, but I switched to MyFitnessPal post-op because it does a much better job of helping me track my Protein. Plus, it's free!

I started exercising more. I was practically immobile and got an exercise peddler and pedaled it with my hands while watching tv. I worked up to at least an hour a day.

Most surgeon's have some sort of a two week (or so) required pre-op diet to shrink your liver. You may lose some weight with that.

Best of luck with your journey. My surgeon was outstanding and was part of a Bariatric Center of Excellence with a great staff. I highly recommend you make sure that whoever you choose is also at a Bariatric Center of Excellence. These seem to have the best support services.

Keep us posted on how you are doing.

I lost about 70 lbs in the year before surgery by going high protein/low carb and faithfully logging my food intake in myfitnesspal.

I used fitness pal as well, very easy logging food. My surgery is set for November 23rd and I started in April at 444lbs, I am current 382 and hope to be 375 before surgery. Everybody's body is different, and people lose weight at different speeds. I had to set my mind to believe that food is fuel, and in some ways it works. I don't desire a lot of fast foods. If I did, I had it... Example went to McDonald's because I didn't have anything for lunch and I got a cheeseburger happy meal, yes I was even excited about the toy. But I definitely excersiced, I bought a small pedal bike. I watched tv or played video games with the kids and rode the bike. Best of luck to you. It is a journey but I believe it is going to well worth it.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
