Dr Yau's pre-op diet - ideas?

Recommended Posts

How do some people do this for two weeks? I have to do it for one week, but I started a couple of days early since I gained 10 lbs over the summer. I'm not completely sick of cottage cheese & yogurt yet, but I'm getting close. Six days to go!

I make mocha/coffee smoothies, sprinkle cinnamon on the cottage cheese, mix Protein into yogurt; I've got sf Jello (yuck - can't they make it with Splenda?), sf popsicles, broth, teas, sf drinks, Water and homemade lemonade. I picked up Magic Bullet and I love using it.

Any other fab ideas anyone out there has? Puh-leeze! :help:

I booked 4 months ago, I can't believe the day is almost here - but then Canadian summers flash by quicker then greased pigs on glass mountains haha. I'm excited but not so much looking forward to the clear fluids.

At TLBC, do they put you under with the mask or with a drip? :notagree

Thanks!

I got put under by IV. I don't know its a case by case thing tho. Either way, theyre a great clinic. Yeah, the diet SUCKKKKSSSSS tho. (they all do). But doing it is hell. I basically had yogurt the first day then fasted for 9...i know its bad, but i literally felt better about not eating than the thought of eating yogurt. Just hang in there, thats the only thing i can say really.

Hi I had the drip put in but they also put a mask over my face and I fought like hell but someone was awlfully strong and I went under in seconds.

As for the pre op diet, mine was two weeks. Some on the web told me not to worry about quantity so I trucked in tons of cottage cheese (hate yogurt) and every mouthfull I told myself "for the love of me" and I prepared my husband's meals. Just keep remembering why you are on this diet and time will fly. It is for your own safety that the liver be smaller so hang in there. Doddie.

Count yourself lucky if you can have yogurt and cottage cheese. I am on my week 4 of the full liquid diet and neither of those is permitted. 2 weeks before my surgery I had to stick to Protein shakes and broths. Now 2 weeks after my surgery I am on the same diet but with strained cream Soups added. I start the pureed foods on Monday. WhooHooooooooooo!

The first 3 days of the liquid preop is hard - after that is gets easier - trust me.

Good luck with your surgery.

Thanks for the thoughts and encouragment!!

I guess there's not too mant ways to combine yogurt & cottage cheese. I have invented "cream cheese" by mixing herbs & spices with plain yog, then draining it with cheesecloth. I used Costco's spicy spaghetti seasoning dill, but there must be a thousand different flavours you can make. I'll try something sweeter next time.

The anesthetic bit scares me - I hate going under, it's like dying.

Four days to go!

BOTH, it was a great experience, no vomiting, almost no pain.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing!

The anesthetic is really not that bad. Waking from it sucks, but other than that its ok. Unless you've had complications in the past? If not, it should go well, they have a great doc

I just joined this board last night so maybe I'll find the answer somewhere but I've been reading that some people eat cottage cheese and yogurt before surgery. I was on opti-fast for 3 weeks...I guess every doctor/clinic decides how they want to do it. Just wondering.

Hi Nancy - I like both these boards (SWLC and this one) - yes you'll find a great variation of diets and timetables for introducing post-op foods, as well as fills. Pros and cons to all and it is great to see the variation.

I think all diets accomplish the same goal and that is to shrink the liver so the docs can move it aside to put the band on the stomach. Each clinic has a diet that they think is the most successful. I was on yogurt and cottage cheese and really didn't mind it at all for the two weeks. Once I was told I could eat all I wanted then I was OK with it. Just kept one thing in mind all the time and that was "shrink the liver to prevent complications". Didn't care what I ate as I was so keen to have the band and I haven't regretted my decision in the least. Doddie.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
