Foods to keep you full.

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that I feel hungry a lot. I'm 6 month post op RNY. I used to drink a Protein Powder with milk and coffee in the morning but I've switched to having an egg with toast or yogurt with fruit, etc. but I've noticed I've been snacking a lot and I'm nervous about my increased appetite. What are some suggestions for foods that keep you feeling full? I actually consumed 1700 calories yesterday vs my average 900-1100 calories. Yikes!

This is that time post op when everything begins to change. Firstly the first 6 months portions change from 1/2 cup to more like 3/4 to a full cup.

In addition you begin to recognize slider foods.

I am two years post op and usually consume 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups of food depending on what I am eating. I can eat more salad than meat but meat keeps me fuller longer even though i eat less of it.

The things that fill me up and keep me full longest is:

Full fat cheese

lunch meats

Dense meat like chicken breast and fish

Nuts - however just a 1/4 cup and no more

Cottage cheese

Raw veggies and full fat ranch dip

salad with Protein on top like chicken or cottage cheese

Foods that seem to slip right through

Yogurt

Protein shakes

Any carb items that I shouldn't have anyway and try to avoid

pudding

Every once in a while I have a bowl of Cereal and talk about being hungry again in 20 minutes.....i keep that to maybe once a week if that.

Thanks @Djmohr. I did just start eating Cereal with a banana and milk as only Protein. Loved the crunch but I need to stay away. Gotta go back to the basic rules. I also eat until I feel full. I need to eat slower and measure!!!

Thanks @kymberle61. My NUT told me to keep my Protein at 62g due to my height (1g per 1" of height), I'm 5'2". My Protein powder plus milk is almost half my Protein (28) for the day which leave 32g protein for lunch and dinner and no Snacks. I could try cutting my protein powder in half. Have you heard this before about one gram of protein per inch of height? How many grams of protein do you consume in a day? Thanks

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
