Hi Everyone! Quick question. I have five medications that I take daily. One may go away after surgery but the rest will stay. I have been told I have to crush them for 3 months post surgery as they are larger than the head of a pencil eraser and they don't come in a liquid format. I tried crushing them today and putting them in a shot glass with Water. Needless to say it was AWFUL! Anyone out there have to do this as well and if so any tips? Thank you in advance for you help!

Try sugar free pudding or even applesauce.

You won't be able to do this immediately after surgery, but when you are cleared for sugar-free applesauce, it works pretty well. Same for a little yogurt or cottage cheese once you're cleared for those. Sorry, no cheerful suggestion from me for when you're on liquids only. Maybe you can mix Crystal Light or similar product into the Water. It still won't be fun, but perhaps better than plain Water. Or any of the other liquids (but not hot ones).

Some prescriptions should not be crushed or, in the case of capsules, opened. Check with your pharmacist about each of yours. If you get "Don't do it" as an answer, talk to your prescribing doctor(s). They may tell you it's okay to stop whichever drug for a short time.

Hi I'm 3weeks 4 days out and this is the worst thing ever !! Just be careful if mixed with Water try not to have to much and gulp it down cos if you think it's bad going down it's even worse coming back up !! Good luck with your surgery

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. My surgery is on October 31st and I am on an all liquid diet right now so I will take this next week to try and find a method for during the liquids only phase. Maybe mix with lukewarm broth or even SF Jell-O perhaps? Once I hit the mushies phase I am thinking the SF applesauce or SF pudding will be the way to go.

Hi I am going to agree with WLSResources, not all meds can be crushed, some meds interact w/milk products n shd not be mixed with them, applesauce is usually a safe bet for mixing with crushed meds, a lot of drugs can be compounded by your local pharmacist into a liquid formulation with taste-masking flavors (additional cost tho) Since we don't know what meds you are taking, talk to your pharmacist.

***if you are allowed peanut butter(pls check) coating tongue a bit with it will mask pretty much any awful tasting Med. ***

And yes, I am a pharmacist.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
