Pain in left shoulder?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm currently 5 days post op and I've been having a pain in my left shoulder when I take deep breaths in. Just was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this? In thinking it's just from the gas but I have been constantly walking since surgery just wanted to make sure it's not possibly a bigger issue. Thanks for any replies and advice!

Hello Jessica

Most likely it's the pain from the gas they use during Surgury. It can last a while. It should get better the more you move. You will be ok

I'm only 4 days post op but I'm going to assume it's gas. This was explained to me prior to bring the procedure. I had pain in my right shoulder 2 days out and I took mylicon gas drops. It has worked wonders. They're infant gas drops, I take 2 droppers full under the tongue every 4 hours. Also warm showers help.

I say "gas." Walking may help at times, but it's no guarantee. Some people use Gas-X or some sort of gas strips; I've never heard of mylicon, as @@jwidner suggests, but why not? Babies are cute.

Apart from the over-the-counter products, all you really can do is be patient.

I use PAPAYA ENZYMES they are chewable and 100% natural. They have saved me so many times!!! You can buy them at Walmart for less than $5.00. They also aid in digestion. They have saved me so many times!! I'm not a DR so please ask yours about them. My mom used them for years and told me how great they worked. Of course, I didn't believe her. You know when you are young our MOM's don't really know much!! She was right. Talk to your Dr and if he ok's them it is a WIN WIN situation!!

BTW Mylicon is what I used on my babies when they had gas!! It is another good one.

Please don't panic as everyone is different and my reply is only for awareness..... I had severe pain in my left shoulder and left side. Thought for sure it was gas. Same story...tried everything...didn't help. Pain meds masked it but when they wore off...yikes! I started to have shortness of breath and having difficulty taking a deep breath. I quickly developed a fever and called my surgeon. Went to the hospital and they ended up finding some Fluid in my left lung and pneumonia. I had a nice weeks stay at the hospital. Once on antibiotics for several days, the pain eased. Not sure if it was 100% pneumonia that was causing the pain etc or if I did in fact have some gas issues. My point to this is pay attention to your body and watch for fever and breathing issues. I pray it's gas in your case and you start to feel better soon!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
