Experienced Sleevers please help! Any side Effects from getting the VSG?

Recommended Posts

No major complaints

Had a ton of hair to start, now it's just easier to deal with and only 5mins to dry/straighten instead of 15mins. Although when I'm losing hair I could make wigs for everyone! Biotin didn't make a difference.

Being active is so much easier - ran 5k, 10k, handful or so half marathons, marathon, sprint triathlon and Iron man 70.3!

Some change in taste - scrabbled eggs are disgusting!

Sometimes things high in sugar upset my stomach.

Continued issues with heart burn, hiatal hernia repair helped with some of it and now that gallbladder is out, hopefully helps some more.

Not a single regret!

I was 3 years post op in September of this year.

As far as physical side-effects, I've had a pretty smooth journey. My B12 was a little low at first, which is pretty common. I had a couple of monthly injections for that and fine since then. Around 2.5 years post op, following my Tummy Tuck, I became severely anemic requiring blood and Iron transfusions. We can't say with certainty it was because of the sleeve , and honestly I think it was related more to blood loss during the tummy tuck surgery. That was probably the most serious of the complications. The only other thing was loose skin, and I was able to get my panni & TT covered by insurance for that.

Positive side effects abound though!

@@livvsmum if you have anemia, try eating liver. Liver is really good for anemia.

I also used to be severely anemic. I tried oriental medicine herbal tonics. Was over the anemia within a month :)

The only negative side effect for me is GERD, but I had it before the surgery. I take medication for it. No biggie.

I have never dumped.

I have never thrown up.

I can eat anything I choose to eat, no food has ever 'disagreed' with me.

All my labs are perfect. No deficiencies.

I lost my excess weight, and have kept it off for over a year. I feel completely normal except I can't eat as much in one sitting as other people.

Most of the time, you're going to see people who ARE having difficulties on forums like these, just because it's a support forum. Do your research and look at statistics of the complications and go from there. You're going to have skewed results more likely from support forums.

Where did you get sleeved?

I haven't had any side effects unless you count positive things like "my blood pressure went from uncontrollably high to normal" as a side effect. I can't eat bread or drink carbonated drinks without discomfort but I don't really think of that as a side effect.

I had lost most of my hair pre-op anyway due to bad genetics so Hair loss wasn't really an issue for me.

What doctor did you use

I am thirteen months out from surgery. The only negative has been some reflux issues but that is controlled through taking a ppi. The positives have been wonderful, my blood pressure is great, my IBS has resolved, I am never short of breath anymore, I am active, I participate in life now, I could go on and on but to sum it up doing this and losing 163 lbs so far has given me my life back.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
