mizzylou 0 Posted October 21, 2016 So my insurance requires the 6 month pre op supervised diet now I'm exactly 40 bmi if I lose let's say 5-10 lbs will they still do the surgery even though I started my initial visit at 40 bmi? PorkChopExpress 821 Posted October 21, 2016 (edited) It's kind of a crapshoot, I wouldn't risk it...try to maintain your BMI. Insurance companies are tricky that way. My wife is in the same boat, having to maintain at 40 BMI for the purposes of insurance covering it. Usually these six month programs explain to you up front that you're under no obligation to lose weight, it's primarily for the education and preparation. catlady2012 73 Posted October 21, 2016 My insurance BCBS went by my original weight and required a 10% weight loss during 6 months doctor visits. All insurances have different requirements so check your coverage. Best wishes. Sent from my XT1096 using the BariatricPal App
Babbs 14,681 Posted October 21, 2016 My insurance was Cigna. I was a 40 BMI and had surgery at a 39. It was explained to me that insurances go by the STARTING BMI. 1 sassy683 reacted to this
FunkyMunkyBrat 205 Posted October 21, 2016 (edited) I agree with @@PorkChopExpress call your insurance and ask them how they do it because they are all so different. Even if you have the same insurance company as someone else.. Through different employers the plans have different rules Munky Edited October 21, 2016 by FunkyMunkyBrat 1 njgal reacted to this
beaker27 37 Posted November 13, 2016 My Bariatric program explained they submit my starting weight. Also, I have Cigna ins and there is no weight loss requirements, however I cannot gain weight during the diet period. Vinasu 621 Posted November 13, 2016 Double check. My insurance went by my weight after my 3-month diet. I started at 44 BMI, but barely made the cutoff after three months at 40 BMI. So ask! Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App
RNMomof4 86 Posted November 14, 2016 I was started at around 42 and was careful not to drop below 40 just in case. Sent from my iPhone

confusedturtle3 246 Posted October 18, 2017 I'm in the same boat. My BMI is 40.1, my NUT said I can't lose any weight before surgery. How do I maintain my weight with the 2 week pre-op diet coming up? I have BCBS CareFirst of MD...I’m in the same situation and wondering the same thing. I’m going to call my doc and ask which weight is used for insurance clearance and will the preop diet disqualify me if I fall under 30 BMI. I started at a 41 and I’m barely a 40 now, any gain and my surgery is cancelled. HW 248 CW 241 Surgery Date: pending 11/21/2017
FabNFit@40 52 Posted October 30, 2017 Like everyone else says check with your insurance. I started with 40 BMI and Nut told me not to loose more than 6 pounds, that was before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. My insurance would allow a BMI of less than 40 with a comorbitity. I have struggled with loosing the last few pounds but insurance approved me, now just waiting for a surgery date

I am focusing on prepping meals/bone broths for after surgery and taking notes on things that will be helpful to me before and after surgery. temkins 71 Posted October 31, 2017 if your insurance company is trying to screw you, do the same to their policies. Just put some weights in your pockets and eat/drink a lot before starting the program (your initial first scale check). That will boost your BMI! Ofc I'm just kidding
