Nauseous 5 weeks post op!

Recommended Posts

Hi there, just a quick question. I'm 5 weeks post op from having the sleeve done. Developed a lactose intolerance when I started on my dairy, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, string cheese. Doing better if I take a lactose medication before I eat. But the last two weeks I'm constantly nauseated. If I eat, if I don't eat, and I have absolutely NO appetite. My tastebuds have changed and everything tastes awful. Has anyone experienced any of this?

If you are constantly nauseated you should call your surgeon. There are meds for that.

I was nauseous a lot of the time after I ate At 5-6 weeks out. There were days when no matter what I put in the sleeve didn't like it. Other days no problem. It was not constant but it felt like it happened a lot, for probably the first few months. If it's not specifically related to eating, you should probably get checked out. I think it only a month out of the surgery like that the body is going through a lot and any number of symptoms could just be a result of your body trying to rebalance itself and purging toxins, but there are other things that could be going on that might be more serious and worth finding out about. If it were me, the first thing I would be looking at is what am I putting in my body since surgery that I wasn't putting in before. Perhaps you're allergic to something in the Protein shakes you're drinking or maybe you can't tolerate low-quality supplements or something like that. But I would also swing by my surgeons office for a quick check up and/ bloodwork.

For a few weeks... months... food was of no interest to me. For many of us we don't really have an appetite. We eat because we need to eat or we will pass out. I'm not really all that excited about food lately. It's just... food.

It could be that your stomach just doesn't like dairy. Nausea = rejection to me so I take it back a step.

Nausea could also signal excess acid production, so try a PPI (Zantac, Nexium, etc) if you're not on one. Many of us go through these adjustment periods. Hang in there but make sure your team knows you're experiencing this.

I experienced all of that for the 1st 3 months so you are not alone and couldn't tolerate Protein Shakes (lactose, whey, isolate etc) at all but you should talk to your family doc or surgeon about medication for the nausea because the initial med I was on was not working for me and I waited to long and got dehydrated. Which is where the ER doc switched my nausea meds I was still nauseated after the switch but it was no where near as bad and my body was able to start tolerating liquids and a little food which you will need to get better. Wishing you a speedy recovery I know 1st hand how much this part sucks but it will be worth it in the end.

I was nauseous for months. I still get nauseous sometimes if I put the wrong thing in my body. Some days, especially in the first six months, no matter what I ate I felt nauseous. Other days, fine. It's just part of the process.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
