Gas Removal at Surgery

Recommended Posts

At my last Pre-Surgery visit I asked about Gas X. The Nurse Practitioner told me that the Surgeon removes the gas after surgery. I have been reading this forum for a few months now and I see people complaining about the gas pain all the time and to walk to relieve it. Has any one heard of this removal? I have one last pre-op appointment two days before surgery where I actually see the doctor and will ask him then.

My understanding is that they do remove much of the gas but it does land in pockets. When i had my gall bladder removed the pain between my shoulders was awful. Walking it off will help.

They are not able to remove 100% of the gas unfortunately. After my gallbladder surgery I had gas to settle into my left shoulder and it was horrible pain that lasted for hours.

I also asked my surgeon if I could take Gas-X, and he said no, he had rather I didn't, but instead he preferred I walk it off to be sure to get rid of it quicker. So I guess that's what I will do, however I did buy some and may use it once I get home from the hospital if I see that I need it.

Trust me....they don't remove it all. I really had NO pain from the surgery itself, it was that lousy gas that makes you very uncomfortable until you get rid of it.

Now, that being said gas x don't help with that, gas x is great for when your bowels begin to work again because that can really cause some pain.

I used gas x chewable, a heating pad, sipped Water constantly and walked as much as i possibly could stand. I had surgery on Monday and I took my last pain med on Wed night. Honestly the pain meds don't help with that gas pain the only thing that does is moving a lot and for me a heating pad or hot packs.

Not everyone has issues with gas, or some surgeons use less or remove more. I had no issues with gas pain and barely any connected to the surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
