Protein drinks post surgery

Recommended Posts

:)Hi all...I have a question regarding Protein drinks. My surgery is on 9/13 - less than a week! I am very excited and nervous at the same time. I have been reading that just about everyone uses some time of Protein Drink. I know I will be full liquids for a while but even after I am on a regular diet, I am thinking I will still need the Protein Drink. I would like some suggestions on what brand Protein shake to get..... I am not sure I ever bought one of those in my life so I need some advice! Also, after surgery are tic tacs, mints, etc. okay? In the past I always have one of those nearby to help with not eating. I would appreciate any advice!

Thanks!

I'm three days post-op and just started full liquids today. I bought a brand of drinks called Isopure. Its like a fruit drink but in 20oz has 40 grams of Protein. In addition to that I bought unflavored soy Protein powder (has less cholesterol than whey protein) to add to everything I am eating like Soups, yogurt and Cereal. I had to get off the low carb slim fast. I was so sick of it after the pre-op diet. I plan on mixing my own Protein Drinks with the powder later. Also, a lot of people really like a brand called powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury. Its medical grade Protein and it comes in flavors and i've heard its really good.

Good Luck!

My favorite is GNC Soy Protein 95 but like others I hear the unjury is good. I am about to order some samples to see for myself. Also I've tried Walmart EAS Soy. It's okay but not as good as GNC. Yes, you will be on Protein (per my dietician) the rest of your life!! I was told to take in an additional 25-50 grams after I am banded for maintenance.

I guess.. out of boredom from havin' to stay late at work, I decided.. despite the fact I've yet to meet a Protein Shake I could tolerate, I wanted to try some more. So I looked for a place with samples..

I wanted to try nectar, and they also had Dymatize..$1.89 per sample.. so I got 3 nectar and 2 dymatize..

$9.45 total... I selected cheapest shipping (but it didn't tell me the cost), and then I hit submit, and without telling me shipping charge, it just processes order, then tells me it was $9 shipping! Stupid people who rip others off. I know there's no way it's 9 dollars to ship it  I could ship it on my account for less than 2 bucks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
