What were your worst symptoms post-op?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

My surgery is 11/11 and I'm not sure if I'm just freaking myself out, but I'm sort of intentionally reading up on all the bad post-op side effects that can happen. Though maybe this is a better place to look than Reddit ;)

For those of you who are post op, what was your worst symptom and when did it occur? For example, did you vomit a lot, how soon after surgery did it happen, and does iftstill happen to you?

I didn't have any post-op symptoms. I mean, I was in a little bit of pain (from the gas) and was tired for a while. Other than that, nothing really. I never threw up or felt nauseated.

Never vomited. Inscision site pain and Constipation were really the only issues I had.

I agree with you, there is a lot of sights to find information other than Reddit:-) Sometimes it's best to just put away all the research material and stay off the forums for a few days. Concentrate on all the positive aspects of WLS and why you are doing it in the first place. Take a deep breath and slow down, you have a lot of time. Stop freaking yourself out:-)

As for the worst symptom post op, mine was gas pains in my shoulders and chest immediately after surgery. Other than that, it was uneventful and I don't regret any of the experience for even a second.

Day 1 right after surgery for about a 2-4 hr window:, Severe nausea, pain... Like being hit by a truck. I was released the same afternoon, and once I got home & got my prescription meds, I felt much better. Not sure but I think they didn't give me too much pain/nausea meds in my IV because I had my revision as an outpatient (Surgery at 7 or 8 am, out by 4 pm).

Other than that, it's been a really easy recovery.

The most annoying thing: Itchy incisions and trying not to scratch the wounds open.

My worst pain but didn't need meds was the left incision laying and raising our of bed abdominal muscles I'm sure. Not too terrible. Constipation, not from pain meds, I've had major back issues that caused it years ago problem is couldn't use normal remedy because of new stomach. All is well now

I had my surgery Monday 10/17. They ended up also doing a hiatel hernia repair at the same time. The worst symptom was probably the pain in left shoulder and neck which they say is very common but their pain meds in hospital took care of it. Gas Pains started later that night but again were manageable and walking helps so much. I was home 24 hours later and honestly I feel pretty good. I too read all the horror stories as I prepared for this surgery. I had also had never had general anesthesia and was terrified I would;t even wake up from the surgery. Then I had nervousness about blood clots - you name it I was stressing about it. The surgery was a breeze. The pain was manageable - it is now 36 hours post op and am not even needing to take the pain meds they sent me home with. Still have some trapped gas but the more I move the better it gets. I still feel bloated and a bit sore but honestly I also feel great - energized and ready to start this new life :) Best of luck to you. Try not to stress too much about the what ifs

I threw up 2 x while trying to take my trazadone crushed and mixed with a water/ Gatorade mixture. Changed to crushed and mixed with applesauce. Still horrible taste but I no longer get sick. That was my worst problem.

Most immediate pain was nausea but I ended up getting a patch behind my ear for about a week which helped considerably. Also had the usual gas pain and soreness (due to the nausea I did NOT take pain meds at all). Now, six weeks post op, my only real symptom is that I get sporadic tingling/numbness in my right upper leg.

I was in need out of the hospital 8 hours outpatient. Seriously was tired, and slept. Never had any real pain, no nausea. I do remember the uncomfortable feeling in the shoulder, from gas.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
