Has Anyone Been Diagnosed With Fibromyalgia Before Having WLS?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone out there had been diagnosed with fibro before having bypass surgery. I can't find a straight answer from any of my docs and there isn't anyone in my support group or pain group with this particular issue. I'm wondering if this weight loss is going to "cure " my fibro. Not that I wouldn't have done this anyway, I am a revision patient from a VBG/SR back in 1999, having issues with the ring. Just wondering if my horrendous pain might actually go away in the next year?

There is no cure.. But it could put less stress on your body n less pain..

Has it made any significant difference in your pain or has it progressed over the years like you think it would have regardless of your weight? How long did you have fibro before you had your bypass surgery?

Yes - but as stated above there isn't a cure for fibromyalgia. Hopefully there will be less strain on your muscles but it would only make a marginal change.

Load up on B12. Not having junk in your body will make you feel better all around. I literally feel your pain, diagnosed at 26.

Well, the pain doc I have now doesn't treat fibro, only my bulging and partially ruptured discs. Even this she seems to think she can get me completely off pain meds! I'm tired of doctors looking at my weight and not at me when diagnosing and treating. I'm really hoping this changes when the weight is gone.

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about a year prior to my surgery in June of this year. I'm still on amitriptyline but both the trigger points in my back AND my peripheral limb pain are completely gone. It's been miraculous, I was having acupuncture weekly, taking the amitriptyline and also had tried tramadol with no relief. I'd gotten to the point that I needed Vicoden occasionally to control the trigger point pain enough to sleep.

I know it's not a typical outcome of the surgery, and I didn't expect it, but it's been one of the best things that's happened to me post-op :)

I haven't actually had the surgery yet so I can't give you an answer and on top of Fibro I have chronic Lymes.. But I know losing weight and talking stress off my body certainly can't hurt.. I'm just not expecting miracles as far as the other stuff goes but IF it helps I'll be thrilled!

And also am so so sick of doctors acting like all my issues are will go away if I'm not fat

Although - what surgery WILL help with is fitting into bathtubs to take an epsom salt or aromatherapy bath! I'm really tall so I don't fit well anyway but hey! It'll be better!

I have fibromyalgia but also gave autoimmune arthritis and other chronic pain issues. My surgeon was straight with me...he said it's not likely to get worse but less weight can help tge pain however WLS is not going to cure your pain issues

I have it and the dr said I will always have it but less stress on my body will make it 90 times better. I'm excited to see bc I'm in a lot of pain every day and refuse narcotics. But imagine all the weight we are carrying can't be better that's for sure I can't wait to feel better

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia almost 2 years ago. I had my gastric bypass surgery on September 13, 2016. I was on a high dose of lyrica just to function on a day to day basis. I have not taken a lyrica since a week before surgery and I have not needed it. I have lost about 45 pounds since surgery and I feel great. It was like someone flipped a switch. When the pounds started coming off, the pain started leaving as well! Good luck to you!

Had fibromyalgia for several years diagnosed in 2010 after getting on disability for a back injury as well. Had rny 10/3/16 almost 6 weeks ago. I don't take any prescription meds now. Since surgery. Off diabetes med 1000 2times a day, percocet 10 4-5 times a day, baclofen 10 3times a day and lyrica 50 3times a day.

Now take Vitamin cal daily and B12 injection monthly. Loving this life. I still have some pain, stiffness, soreness, but its tolerable nothing the hot tub, tens unit, or bath cant fix.

I was diagnosed before WLS. I am now at goal the fibro is mostly gone after WLS surgery. Also off cymbalta that I was taking for it. Never take anything stronger than Tylenol now. Sure I get achy on occasion but is infrequent and mild compared to before. The fibromyalgia actually diminished before a lost a ton of weight. I think my old diet was the cause. New eating habits.... New pain free woman.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
