birth control after surgery and while losing weight?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am in the process of getting approved for the sleeve, my surgeons and my primary care MD want me to be on some form of BC after surgery in order to lose the weight. They are concerned that once I begin to take a large amount of weight off my fertility will kick in. This would be great since we tried for two years with no luck getting pregnant, all the fertility meds just made me gain weight. The overall goal is for me to lose the weight in the post op period and then go back to trying once I am at my goal weight. So I have to find some form of birth control prior to surgery. Right now my husband and I are just using the calendar method, but I am afraid this will not be enough once I have surgery. So my options are either the nuvaring or the IUD. I am a bit concerned about the IUD since I don't have any children and the side effects from the IUD. Has anyone here used the nuvaring? or the IUD? and would be willing to share your thoughts with me?

Thank you so much!

I have Mirena, I am not good with taking my medicine as scheduled and knew that I didn't want to risk getting pregnant so soon after surgery.

Calender method and condoms.

Anything hormonal doesn't work well for me.

Be careful - I just had my second surgery today for extremely heavy bleeding since the day after surgery. It's been extremely painful, and the last thing I was expecting was to go to the Obgyn last week, ER 2 nights ago, Obgyn yesterday, and into urgent surgery today.

I take BC pills and and the husband wears condoms. I take the heavy duty pills because I would hemmorage constantly - even after my cycle should be done. I'm sure that will resolve itself once the weight comes off but I'll be turning 42 before the year is out and starting a family in my 40's sounds like climbing Mount Everest 10 times in a row with no rest.

Not on any pills I have regular cycles with my PCOS so we were trying for the last two years for a baby but my weight is really playing havoc on my fertility so I'm gonna do WLS and get the weight off and then try again. I have a latex allergy so condoms r a not an option and the non latex condoms suck so badly so we just do calendar method. My surgeon wants a more reliable method for after surgery so I'm just weighing my options.

Just make sure to do your research. Sounds like you have it all under control best of luck with your surgery and afterward, pregnancy!

I have to do implant or IUD. My surgeon said same thing about the fertility going up after surgery. She also said I can't get pregnant for 18 months because of all kinds of complications due to the surgery

I've had both the copper IUD and the Mirena IUD. I would never ever recommend the Mirena to anyone. I had the worst side effects from it and the worst part is my doctors made keep it in for six months because "my body needed time to adjust". What a crock of shit.

BUT. Everyone is different. I can't say you will have all the side effects or none. Personally I would never recommend it to anyone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
