Eating out 5wks post-op

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I'm 4 weeks post op and looking for some advice about eating out at this stage.

So in about a week I have a work-related event that involves eating out at a restaurant. At this point I've been cleared for soft foods and am no longer on purees. I haven't told anyone about what type of surgery it is and I'm trying to keep it a secret. I've been avoiding eating out with my friends for the past few weeks but this event is one that I'm hosting so I'm expected to be there.

So I've looked up the restaurant in advance and looked at the menu thoroughly and I assume could probably safely order the grilled salmon. I haven't tried introducing salmon into my diet yet so before I go I'll be cooking some salmon at home and seeing if I am able to tolerate it well. At this point I can comfortably eat about 3oz of tuna so i don't expect to be eating any more than that of the salmon, so obviously I won't even touch the side of vegetables and ask for a to go container right off the bat.

For more experienced vsgers, how did you handle eating out early post op? I don't want to do anything that would jeaporidize my health or my weight loss, so if eating out is just a bad idea at this point then I probably won't go. but just looking for some advice and wanted to hear what you all think. Thanks! :)

I had a banquet to attend 4 weeks post op. I scraped the sauce off the chicken breast, cut everything on the plate really small and just ate some of the chicken. With everything cut small, you couldn't tell if I ate anything at all. I also skipped the cheesecake for dessert. Even my sister thought I ate way more than I did.

Sorry, should have mentioned I am post RNY 9/8/16

I had grilled salmon at a cookout during my soft foods phase. It sounds like a great choice. Just eat slowly, take small bites, and chew thoroughly.

Enjoy yourself!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
