Usually through some sort of diet. Each doctor differs in what kind of pre-op diet they prescribe to their patient. Many doctors prefer a liquid diet for two weeks before the surgery, but others (including mine) prefer a low-carb diet. Did you doctor mention anything to you about dieting, or did s/he simply say "shrink your liver".. if s/he just told you to shrink your liver, shame on him/her for not being informative enough!

When your liver is enlarged it is called fatty liver and it is from consuming too much fat for your body to metabolize. It doesn't happen to everyone, but the way to shrink it is to cut down on excess fat and carbs and eat more grains, lean meats and veggies. Try to eat low cal, small portions and drink lots of Water.< /p>

Have you had any classes?

It's amazing how these docs dont prepare their patients for what's ahead of them.

You shrink your liver by losing weight.

I'm not sure what they want you to do it depends on your nutritionist.

My doc had a few options.

1. Do Atkins (Strict!) for 3 weeks

2. Drink 2 Protein Shakes a day and have one lean cuisine for dinner. If you get hungry have salads with low cal dressing in between meals. Do this for 1-2 weeks.

My doc requires losing 5% of body weight.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
