Odds of being denied through Kaiser

Recommended Posts

So, unfortunately for me, I am always worried and stressing about something. Hopefully some of you wonderful people can set my nerves at ease.

I am on week 8 of my Options Class, which I absolutely love. I started out with a BMI of 41. I am down 8 pounds out of the 11-25 they want me to lose during this program period. So far, I think I am doing okay.

Here is my worry... what are the odds that I still get denied by the surgeon? Does anyone have any suggestions when dealing with Kaiser?

Thank you in advance!

My words may not help, simply because I have yet to attend my orientation for Options, but I read something that may lead you in the direction you're hoping to go. In my search for information about Kaiser's Options Program, I came across a thread discussing the chances of getting denied once an individual was already in the program. From what I gathered, if you enter the program with a BMI under 40, they may not refer you for surgery, but if you enter the program with a BMI over 40 and are able to lose the weight (that would possibly lower your BMI to under 40), they will not deny you even if you're under. In my journey for answers, I've found out that every single Kaiser facility is different. Best of luck to you! Congrats on the early weight loss!

Loose the 10% they will check and surgeon will too I finished options in socal on 9/24 saw surgeon on 10/5 and he went over the weight and all that and surgery date 10/20 I will be checked as well also I noticed options lies they make the surgeons seem like they are super mean and beyond strict and they are not oh and when they send you for your labs do them right away all of them labs ekg etc. they will hold referral if something comes out abnormal. Umm I believe that's it and good luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
