Hiking & Camping VSG Food Ideas

Recommended Posts

Before my surgery I used to really enjoy camping and as much hiking as my body would allow me to do. Now that I'm post op, have lost some tonnage, and am working out more I plan on starting to hike a LOT more. I'm looking for food ideas for backpacking, hiking, and camping that are VSG safe, light weight, easy to make, and not going to halt my weight loss. So let's hear it, what do ya'll take?

How about pocket recipes? This is food wrapped in tin foil (use heavy tin foil) You can pre-make them. Your choice of meat and veggies. You can cook them on a grill or put in hot coals. I use to do a lot of tent camping back in the day. This was my go to way to cook. Google it or try pintrest. We now live full time in a 36 ft motorhome and are seeing the U.S.A.

Glamping is what it's called. Lol

If you are hiking sounds like you will need beef Jerky, trail mix, and light items for food. The GENEPRO Protein Powder is about one T. Of powder and would mean x with most anything. I have never hiked, but I loved camping in the motor home. I need a cooler and more than I can carry, so good luck with your hiking!!!!

I'd think you'd want to focus on high Protein Meal Replacement bars for hiking. That kind of thing is relatively light, dense in nutrients, and won't take up too much pack space. Canned meats would work, too, and things like dried or toasted edamame would be an excellent trail snack. Remember, protein is always the first thing you need to focus on!

Happy trails!

Not bad ideas. Just curious what people who had the sleeve took with them. I know it's important to keep your energy up while hiking but we get in such little food that the choices are very important.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
