Before surgery diet ..

Recommended Posts

My surgeon and nut said I only need to have Clear liquids 24hrs before surgery.

I thought this is odd..

I decided that I would do my own before surgery . My surgery is Thursday Oct 20 .

I started on sat ..

I had a shake for Breakfast shake for lunch Protein Shake that is

And unfortunately went to great adventure and had a burger and a few fries for dinner I had nothing else the rest of the night .

On Sunday I had a Protein Shake for brunch I woke up late had Water and decafinated tea for lunch .my stomach felt weird and so did I. I felt exhausted and a little yucky ..I bought myself a Bai coconut drink went home and had about 8 oz of chicken and some green Beans ..

My question is am I doing it correctly or should I stop everything now to shrink the liver and empty my stomach ..

Please help ty ..

Having liquids only before surgery is essential to shrinking your organs and is only for your good. I was on liquid diet for 2 weeks before surgery with only Protein shakes (slim fast, 3) a day. We did have a memorial gathering for my mom about a week before surgery where I had permission to have a few meals, as we were all out of state and would not be getting back together for a few years at least. My dr said, I still looked great, organs at least. I would be nervous to deviate from what the dr says is best for you.

Hi, I am Lenore, I went to see nutritionist Tuesday and the class was over 2 hours along with other people getting the surgery. She said that I would have to start my week of all liquids on the 18th of this month. My date is the 25th I really really pray that I can do this liquid for the week. I went to the store and bought what was on the list so Tuesday is the day.I was told also to drink a half bottle of citric magnesia The day before surgery. Did anybody, doctors tell them that they had to drink that as well ?.

If your BMI is low and you don't have fatty liver disease you don't need a pre-op diet.

So your sugeon is correct in just having you do the 24 clear liquid diet before surgery to clear you out for surgery.

There are a lot of newer, successful Drs that believe the long per-op diet is counter productive and runs patients down prior to surgery.

So enjoy that you don't have a pre-op diet and keep your strength up. Going into surgery weak seems counter productive. I was almost dizzy by the time I made it to the hospital.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
