Danika's Journey 11/10/16

Recommended Posts

Gday all. My name is Danika and I was bypassed on the 11th of October 2016. Roux en y to be exact. I'm 26 years old, a chef, married and love life. I like sports, old school music and animals. I've always been overweight. Since I was 8 years old I've struggled to lose it. But it got really hard once I hit puberty. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 15. I finished school and found my calling as a chef. I lost a bit of weight byt never got to where I was supposed to be. I met my husband in 2009 and married him in 2013. He has always been a good man. Very supportive and loved me for me. When we started living together in 2010, we let ourselves go a bit. We both put on more weight then ever before and did numerous diets to try to lose it. My heaviest weight was 140kg. The diets I tried never worked. So after years of my parents worring, last year in 2015, I decided to look into weightloss surgery. With my family's support, I met with a surgeon named Dr. Robert Finch. He knew what he was talking about from the beginning. I had faith in him from the start. He was no bull. He told it like it was. I liked him. We booked a surgery date and worked our way there. I did the pre op opti diet and lost 6kg. Surgery day came and it went without a hitch. I was feeling good the day after. Minimal pain and I could keep fluids down well. Now approaching 1 week post op and still feeling positive and motivated. Only issue I'm currently having is getting plain Water down. Its hurting a bit. But apart from that I'm feeling good. My goal weight is 80kg. I'm hoping to get there in 2 years. If not earlier. I would appreciate any advice anyone would like to give me to keep me headded in the right direction. Thanks.

Well g'day love, it's pretty here in Ohio about 27degrees Celsius with only a threat of rain. I think there's a fair sized Aussie presence here on b pal check the, thread sometime. I have a sleep study to complete and then full speed ahead. Maybe before our Thanksgiving (mid to late Nov). Want done before my birthday. That's Boxing Day to you, here they just mark Christmas items down, told my mother she got me cause hospital was running an after Christmas special on babies. Turns out I was due Jan 6th instead. I will be 71 but I want to live a longer thinner healthier life and this weight is pulling me down. After 70 has been rough times

Well good on you for taking the plunge. It's one of the hardest decisions to make and I admire everyone who does it to better themselves.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
