How do you get all your water in?

Recommended Posts

Two days post op, it's impossible. Don't worry about it, just do your best to sip all day long, pretty much. You aren't going to make it to 64 ounces for a while. In fact, after I got onto eating mushy foods three times a day, I have found it hard to get my 64 ounces again. Having to wait 30 minutes before and 45 minutes after a meal means that I have lost almost 4 hours of my day, when it comes to drinking...and it takes me at least a couple hours to get through 16 ounces or so, it seems like. It's tough!

But the thing is, if I'm getting in the neighborhood, I'll be okay. I have been getting around 50 ounces the past week, and honestly there were a lot of days pre-surgery where I didn't get close to that, I'm quite sure. Particularly because I was still drinking Coke and dehydrating myself. As long as I'm not cramping up and am not getting those dehydration symptoms, I feel like I'm doing okay. But just give yourself time, the stomach needs to heal up and it's still swollen...will be for another week or so. Don't push it and don't force it too full, let it heal up. You don't want to pop staples or sutures! :)

It's important to sip, sip, sip all day long. Understand that at two days out- you hopefully are still full of IV fluids so if you only get one ounce in an hour, then you need to make sure every hour you are awake you drink that ounce. Initially, I had to set a timer. Over the next few days, as the swelling goes down that ounce becomes two ounces and so on. No matter what you do though-- fluids are the most important thing. Do not get dehydrated. We can live months without eating but only days without Water.

I couldn't drink the required amount either.. So I had broths and SF Popsicles ..just do what you can to stay hydrated.

Getting the liquids in is an all-day process. I'm lucky that I have been able to get in 64 oz since Day 3 post-op, but I do sip/drink non-stop from when I get up in the morning until I go to bed. I am now (Day 17 post-op) able to drink Water at a fairly regular pace. In fact, I just finished a 16.9 oz bottle in about 20 minutes. (I was pretty impressed with that!)

If you're really worried about dehydration, try getting some g2 Gatorade. It's low calories, low sugar, low carb, and full of electrolytes. My doc swears by it the first week post op.

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

How can your stomach hold 16 oz. All at once??

Once the swelling starts going down you can drink more. Our stomachs don't hold 16 oz of Fluid at once but since liquid drains through the stomach quickly the liquid doesn't stay in the stomach.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
