My surgeon said I didn't have to diet before the surgery just 24 hours before do only Clear liquids .

I spoken to so many people and I go to his support groups and the ones I have spoken to all said 2 weeks before that their dietitian put them on a diet mine did not ..

Did anyone else not have to diet before ..

I'm nervous I might fail because I didn't diet .

Ive got the same thing. The nutritionist just wants me to make better choices. Not an actual diet. I wasn't given a calorie/carb restriction, just a sheet of paper with healthier choices. I am doing my best to avoid over eating and staying away from candy, cake, bread etc. and I'm down 14lbs.

I did ask why I'm not required to do liquid diet for a longer period. She said my surgeon does not like to have people on it that long because it tends to makes some people crave foods they shouldn't have straight out of surgery.

Maybe the extended liquid is why we see so many ask if it's bad they ate tacos, pizza etc 1week out?

No pre-op diet for me. I was told I could have whatever I wanted even the night before surgery. I had no ill effects from that during or after surgery.

It may depend on how much the doctor wants to shrink your liver. Some people, myself included, have a fatty liver. Shrinking the liver makes the surgery safer with less damage to the liver. During surgery, they have to move it out if the way and it's much easier and safer if it's smaller and healthier.

I agree with @@ginabee38 my doc said the exact same thing. It can't hurt if you elect to go liquid on your own.

I did not follow my pre-op diet and I don't know if it had anything to do with my recovery ( still in it's been 4 days). But I was in EXTREME pain and I still have a lot of pain. Not sure if related but if I could do it over I would have done 2 weeks liquid diet

I did not have a 2 week pre-op diet, just 24 hours of Clear Liquids. All went very well

I did the two weeks and lost 11lbs. Not only does it help shrink the liver, it helps to detox your body from sugar and carbs. You're going to crave those foods either way..so better to get a headstart before hand. I'm 6 weeks out and down 25lbs total. The pre op diet definitely prepared me for post op.

The liquid preop diet serves 2 functions - shrink your liver, and get you prepared for post op. You'll want to get your bpdy accustomed to it. I could have cucumber, celery, and sugar free popsicles during mine, plus 5 Optifast products. It wasn't terrible at all after the first few days.

I'd suggest some kind of liquid, high Protein diet or you may struggle more post op.

I'm day 2 on my 2 week liquid diet. Mine is required for liver shrinking. We were told at our pre-op class that if they go in and the liver isn't the size it should be because someone didn't follow the diet they won't perform the surgery. I know I can do this and I'm already down 4 pounds. I just hope it gets a little easier.

35 bmi scheduled 10/18. My dr didn't put me on two week preop diet because I'm low bmi. 2 day clear liquid starts tomorrow. Trust your surgeon. Forum for support. Everyone's program is different.

No pre-op diet for me. Like yourself clear fluids 24 hours before. Surgery was fine and recovery smooth. Just trust their instructions and you'll be fine.

Oh it feels terrible. Hungry, headache, tired. But it's way easier than a lot of people who have the longer liver shrinking diet.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
