What else can be added to protein shakes?

Recommended Posts

This is a good question since I see the dietician on Monday and will have a few questions on this. My issue is I can't use artificial sweeteners (no sugar alcohols at all - sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, etc., no aspartame, etc. (badly affects my lower intestine and causes near instant diarrhea). I have to say I'm concerned about what I'll be able to use. I'm also lactose intolerant! *sigh* I feel I may get stuck with some disgusting no flavour Protein Powder and I'll be dying to find something to flavour them. I was thinking real vanilla (like the pods). I wonder if it's o.k. to scrape natural vanilla into a shake?

I don't use any of those either.. only Stevia .. and I believe the Syntax nectar is made with Stevia .. its not bad at all .. I have several flavors, right now I'm drinking an Orange Cream one :) I hope you manage to find ones that you can use :) .. OK I just looked it up and the Premier Protein & the nectar powders use sucralose(splenda) which were also ones my Lyme doc said were ok for me to have .. Splenda and Stevia were the only ones

I'll also throw out SF syrups! I'd be careful about adding fruit. That's a lot of sugar, natural or not. Strawberries are a big no no immediately post op for sure, as is any fruit that has tiny seeds that can wedge into your staple line.

I was a big fan of dark chocolate shakes with banana or coffee SF Syrup and lots of ice. A frappacino of sorts!

Thank you! I haven't tried either of those sweeteners. I'm not sure about Stevia but that's a good one to speak to Nut about

There are many fruits and vegs I can't have. Big difference when I stick with the ones I can! Strawberries I can have - but obviously not until I'm healed due to the tiny seeds!

My regular add-ins (depending upon my mood) are the following: unsweetened dark cocoa (or cacao powder if I have it), PB2 (but not if your allergic to peanuts, obviously hehe), flaxseed or chia seeds for Fiber, 1/2 small frozen banana, 1/2c frozen blueberries, instant coffee.

During my liquid phase, I did add a few drops of Frontier Banana flavoring instead of a real banana (For the low carbers out there, this is the most awesome banana flavor, by the way).

Depending on your level of lactose intolerance you might be ok with the whey isolate powders (example syntax nectar and unjury). My dietician said many of her lactose intolerant patients did fine with those. She said if those still triggered the intolerance there are soy Protein isolate powders.

I really like the premier shakes but in the liquid form. My NUT said the powder form doesn't have all the nutrients needed after WLS.

I add all sorts of stuff to my shakes:

I add small amounts of frozen fruit

Canned pumpkin with cinnamon Protein Powder and coconut milk

I make green smoothies with spinach and a bit of green apple

I blend coffee/espresso, ice, Water and no cal sweetener to Protein powder for a mock frappucino

I add cocoa powder, stevia and cacao nibs for a chocolate chocolate chip shake

I could go on and on...

You've done some experimenting!

@@ncqt1973,

Good question! Anything to give a little variety to Protein shakes can only help!

pumpkin and spices such as pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice can be a nice addition to a vanilla based shake. Cinnamon and coffee go nicely with chocolate shakes. You can also go with almond butter if you are allergic to Peanut Butter.

For extra Protein, you can add yogurt or tofu. Low-sugar vanilla yogurt can make it a little sweeter if that’s what you’re going for. A little bit of sugar-free pudding mix can give some extra flavor.

Bananas give extra texture if you feel comfortable getting in a few extra carbs from a half a banana. Frozen berries and peaches are also nice.

Enjoy!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
