Meds and Food

Recommended Posts

I stopped taking some mood stabalization and anti-depressants a few months ago. Since then I have gained a bit over 10 pounds. All I think about it eating. It seems that the medications must have helped to level out my moods that it also effected how I ate. So now I am trying to decide what to do. The meds are so expensive I cant really afford them anymore. I also have not had a fill for quit a few months. I wonder if maybe I just need one again or is this issue from the lack of medications. Really I think its a little of both. I am not sure if anyone could relate to this problem or not. I wonder if thier is another kind of drug I could get thats cheaper maybe that can level out how much I think about eating. Lately I think I have been stressed so I eat for comfort. I am not sure how many of u have thought this to urself, "Who cares if I am a little chunky as long as I am happy". Happy while I eat is more like it but after reality kicks in u just feel guilty about failing another day. Any supportive comments or advice would be appriciated. Thx

They took my anti depressant off the market, and since then, I have tried every anti depressant out there and they all gave me horrible side effects. I discovered that regular exercise makes all the difference in the world. I am off of anti depressants for the first time in 30 years.

If you find you really do need one, try one of the ones that have gone generic. Prozac has gone generic and I bet some of the other SSRIs have too. A lot of people actually gain weight from anti depressants though.

I take generic Prozac and get it at Walmart for $4 a month. I love it. I could not make it without it. It's worth looking into. Some other anti-depressants that are available on their $4 plan are Paxil, Celexa and some other older ones (tricyclics but I think they are more likely to cause weight gain). I can't take Celexa because it makes my cravings for carbs and sugars totally uncontrollable. Nobody believes me when I tell them this but I swear its true. It's not that way for everyone though so you have to find whats right for you. I believe that if you need an anti-depressant, you should take one. Life is too short to be miserable and sad all the time. Good luck.

You should also think about getting another fill. You may be feeling hungry because you are underfilled.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
