I wanted to know when to tell my manager I am going ok leave. My surgery won't be until December, but I'm a manager and feel like I should let them know as far in advance as possible. What issues might arise if I tell them too soon? Just wanted to see what you guys think. I feel irresponsible if I wait till last minute.

Thanks

@@ra_girl I informed my boss once I had a surgery date which happened to be a month in advance. Many times FMLA requires 30 days notice so keep an eye on that. Telling them depends on your relationship with them. If you feel that they will be supportive and not give you a hard time about taking the time off - then tell them now. I wouldn't wait to the last minute whatever you do.

Personally and only MY opinion I would say I am having a hernia repair on this date. To each his own. I have seen too much grief here to feel the need to be honest and open about me and my body.

It just depends on your situation. I told my boss pretty early on that I would be having surgery the end of Oct, early Nov. I carry a patient caseload that is usually booked out 4-6 weeks in advance. I had to prepare in advance for my surgery, so I wouldn't put undue stress on my co-worker. This way I also told my patients that I would be out for surgery and there will be a few weeks where I am unavailable.

I didn't plan on telling them other than gallbladder surgery (that was removed too). But the director wanted me to go to Haiti the week I was to return, a month out. There was no way in hell I would go to Haiti within six months, so I had to tell her the full extent of my surgery but made it clear she was not to share this info and as far as I can tell she, nor my supervisor have.

I told work as soon as I got a date. If you're doing short term disability, they'll make you jump through hoops sometines to get it.

I would tell your boss immediately. There should be no issues. Tell them what you want- the truth, hernia, gallbladder, lobotomy, whatever... but tell them. Also, if you're worried about issues, that tells me that you may have the type of employer that has a high turn over rate. Hand them a doctor's note with your surgery date ASAP. closer to surgery, hand them the time off excuse with your physical limitations. If you sit at a desk all day, it doesn't matter... make sure they write your lifting restrictions and that you must consume liquids constantly (if you aren't allowed that sort of thing). I was a restaurant manager and restaurants love to nitpick. Even the most awesome coworkers and bosses.

And keep copies. Even if you're friends with your boss. Keep copies, have them sign your copy

I took2 week sick time, 2 week vacation, and went on restricted duty for 4 week.I notified and set that up with my employer 3 weeks when I ahead once I got my date.My surgen office filled out the paperwork to do without telling what procedure I was having.I had no difficulties after surgery and went back to work a month after surgery on restricted duty.Did not get strength back til 3mo out,but needed that restrictions. It depends on how physical your work.

Technically and legally, I don't think it is legal to ask. I believe it may be some type of HIPPA violation (not sure, but possibly). However, it also depends on the relationship you have with your manager/boss. I told my boss I was having a "procedure" scheduled for 12/23 and needed to take off that last day before the Christmas vacation. She said "and miss the sing-a-long?" (We have a family day almost every month and she is very big on those!) Anyway, she said we will work it out. Just to be safe, I asked my surgeon's office if there was a back-up day, just in case...due to the insurance, I need to have it by the end of the year. I also didn't want to tell too much.

i was thinking of saying the same thing. I've only been at my new place of employment for 2.5 months as of surgery. I'm only taking a week off, but would rather not divulge in too much information.

Well I thought given enough notice would be fine but my FMLA was approved but then my manager on the floor comes back and tells me we're a little stuffed it I guess that's the part of working in the hospital but I'm looking at my health so the day of my surgery I'm off and I'm going along with it if I lose my job oh well. And the thing is she could work with me if she wanted to but I look at it like this God got me

Your health is so much more important. I believe it's technically illegal for her to fire you while you are on FMLA because the point of it is to protect your job while you are on leave. I haven't gotten a surgery date yet, so I haven't told my job yet. Hopefully when I go next Monday I can get a date to give my job. I'm hoping for surgery right around New Years so that will also give them a month notice. I'm also just going to play it like I have to have a hernia or gallbladder removed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
