I have horrible time getting to sleep/stay asleep so does pretty much all my immediate family. I believe undiagnosed insomnia runs in my family. I am exhausted all day long running after my toddler but cant sleep at night. Recently I cannot go to sleep without a sleep aid, my husband is worried I am becoming dependant.

Anyway my question is... did anyone suffer from insomnia pre-op and did WLS affect it for better or worse?

I had sleep problems pre surgery and have worse sleep problems after surgery. I'm hoping this will get better because I can't keep waking up at 4am and going back to sleep at 6am and try to work too!!

I did, both pre op, and post op. My insomnia was due to my hyper-thyroid Graves Disease.

Once my thyroid was destroyed by radio-active treatment, I was OK for couple of months.

Then, post op I had insomnia, really bad one for few months, as my thyroid med was getting too strong with ongoing weight-loss.
I finally had my Thyroxine dose reduced, and 7 months post op I am finally starting to sleep better.

I had to use sleeping pills for a while, as on some nights I was up all night!

Yes, it was exhausting.

Better now, finally!

I had tried everything.. Camomile tea, melatonin 10 mgs, zoplicon.. you name it. I would be sleepy enough to be miserable but not enough to fall asleep. I would then increase the dose, not sleep all night and end up going to work like a zombie.

After the surgery, I can sleep for 12 hours and still be hugging my pillow when it's time to get up. I don't take any sleeping aides and I have not added anything to my routine apart from the weight loss process.

After having to go through years of no sleep of 3-4 hours maximum, I now wonder how anyone can be grumpy through out the day with 8+ hours of sleep every night.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
