When can I start losing weight?

Recommended Posts

I have been gaining, gaining, gaining weight steadily for over a year now. I would work hard and lose a pound or two, even ten pounds once when I had a terrible stomach flu, but then gain it right back and keep on gaining.

Now that I have my surgery consult set up, I am suddenly losing weight! What the hell? I need to keep my BMI up right now. It does me no good to lose just enough to get down to a BMI of 39.9

My consult with the surgeon, and my first dietician visit, is tomorrow. Then I need to have a second dietician visit at least 30 days later. Will it be OK if I lose a little weight between the two visits? Has anyone been turned down for surgery because their BMI is no longer at 40 at the second dietician visit?

Ask. I was at 44bmi for my first visit, but lost a lot on the mandatory diet. When I hit 40bmi, they submitted to the insurance company, and I was at 38bmi the day of surgery. They'll most likely work with you on this.

Wow I had to double check I thought *I* wrote that post lol! I am in the exact same boat, my bmi was 40.9 at my 1st appointment yesterday . And unfortunately they don't submit to insurance (for me anyway) until right before surgery. So the doc and the nutritionist told me to start working out again but also kwp my calories up, add in an extra snack or a shake. It's so weird to be told NOT to lose and maybe even gain a lb. Lol

happy Llama sad Llama... big fat mama Llama.

Usually they go with your weight at the first appointment. My surgeon team expected me to lose weight before surgery on the two week liquid diet. I too was concerned about my BMI but for my surgeon, approval for the surgery was based on the first weigh in. Just ask them at your first appointment

I'm 9 days post op and since the beginning of this journey (seeing the surgeon back in June) I've lost a total of 25 lbs, only 10 of it is post op.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
