Anyone out there that got banded at Hurley Medical in Flint Mi. I have an Oct 8 surgery date. I am finding myself scared but excited to start a new life. How long should I plan to be off work? I am a hairdresser and I do have a high pain tolerance. I find working keeps my mind off my pain. I am open to suggestions. Marcy:clap2:

Marcy I have read that a lot of people go back to work after 3 days depending on the type of work they do - no heavy lifting for about 4 - 6 weeks - you are on your feet all day and moving so that will be good for the gas pains (gas trapped in abdominal cavity following surgery). I arranged my surgery to coincide with 2 weeks vacation and it is the best thing I could have done. I have felt no pressure to keep at it and could rest when I needed to - the one thing that I am not doing very well is walking. My knee is acting up and that is creating some challenges, but I am doing more around the house at a leisurely rate. Worthwhile looking at if you can afford the time off.

I needed a full 4 days before going back to work....and then it was half-days! I suppose I could've pushed myself to go back sooner but I didn't! I also had so much bloated gas I'm not sure I could've worn work clothes before 4 days! LOl! It's also kind hard to return to full days of work when you're only taking in very few calories!!!!

I recently got banded and I would recommend a complete week to recover, learn the new way of eating, and to rest. There are some restrictions after surgery like no driving, no lifting for 4-6 weeks,no vaccuming for 3 weeks, no steps for about a week. Also, depending how long you need to be on pain meds they make you very drowsy. I am about 10 days out and I am just starting to feel like myself again. I only needed the narcotic pain meds for 2 to 3 days though. Good luck to you on your new adventure.

Thanks for the input eveyone. I have decided to take a week vacation after surgery. Now all I need to figure out is what do I tell my clients. I am a hairdresser and my clients seem to want to know everything I do. I was thinking just tell them I need time off for myself. I don't like to lie but I don't know if I should tell that I am having lapband surgery. I am afraid I will get negative remarks if my friends and clients find out about the surgery. What do I do?

Marcy, if you do not feel comfortable explaining the reason for your time off just tell them you have a week of vacation you are using before the busy holiday season. Also, I was just banded two days ago and am taking a week off.I actually feel better standing so far it is harder to stay seated which is what I do all day at work, so i am taking advantage of the full week.

Marcy,

If I had to do it all over again I would tell very few people. People really do mean well but ----------------------------------- Good luck on your decision.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
