Kane Center in Schaumburg

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have been looking into VSG and wanted to know if anyone recently had their surgery done through the Kane Center in Schaumburg. If so, how was your experience? What is the process? How long did it take from the time you met the doctor for consultation to surgery date? Any information regarding the Kane Center will be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Is this center part of a hospital system? We have Advocate, NorthShore, and Northwestern all in that area. I personally went thru NorthShore University Health system. I'd prefer hospital based.

Trying to recall what hospitals Schaumburg has. I know EGV has Alexian.... They are supposed to be pretty good, as well.

@mobello

Northshore was a dream- specifically Dr. Linn, my surgeon.

Likely the most well-organized bariatric team around, and I checked them all out.

Found them to all be on the same message- from the doc to the nutritionist and every one in between. I see him at Glenbrook Hospital but he does all his bariatric surgeries out of Evanston. He has his whole surgical team there and likes working with a group of nurses and techs that do just that.

Hope that helped. As an aside, I know several people who went thru Northwestern down in the city, and all of them, oddly enough, had post op complications. Not saying anything specific other than I can only hope it was coincidental.... Needless to say, I did NOT choose that bariatric team.

Thanks so much for your response! How long did the process take from consultation to surgery. I'm going to contact the office to see if they accept my insurance.

First appointment was in the beginning of December. Had my approval by mid February. Scheduled surgery for early March, but postponed to March 23 so I could take a last minute road trip

The key, really, is to get your ducks lined up from the beginning The minute you have your initial consult, they will tell you what you need in terms of NUT appointments, psych evals, etc.

As soon as you leave, call and schedule ALL of them, even if you need to see the nut or psych a couple of times. Get the appointments on the books!

One thing people don't realize- you do NOT need to do all your support classes pre op at the same place. I did mine through my hospital as well as another. They're free. Take advantage of them. Simply bring the name and date-subject matter covered to the person who is compiling your data. You can knock out 2-3 in a month around our are since we are so densely populated with bariatric facilities.

Thanks so much for your help! I really appreciate it. I was getting anxious because I kept hearing people saying that they are required to do 6 months - a year supervised diets. I'm going for my first consultation at the Kane Center. Hope it goes well.

I'm going through the Kane Center in Hoffman Estates! I'm getting VSG on October 21st at St. Alexius. My surgeon is Dr. Wallace and he's awesome. I had my first consult with them in July and I'm already heading to surgery, so for me it was pretty quick. The timing mostly depends on your insurance.

Let me know if there is anything else I can answer for you!

I was already doing the medically supervised diet through Alexian Brothers (some insurance requires it, mine required 3 months but I had already exceeded that). The diet wasn't working alone, so they referred me to the Kane center. The first step was a 2 hour info session where they go over all the types of surgery. The second was a consult with the surgeon to determine if I was a candidate. The third was insurance verification. This was the hardest part actually. I have Aetna, and apparently the Kane center had gotten burned by Aetna before so they kept saying Aetna wouldn't cover it. It was a lot of back and forth on my part, but I kept on them. Aetna ended up sending a verification that they would definitely pay for the surgery. Next I got a document with all my required tests. Kane center requires an abdominal ultrasound, one visit to the support group, a psych evaluation, and a pulmonologist visit. The pulmonologist also orders a sleep study (mine was done at home). Once all of that was cleared, all my paperwork was submitted to insurance again for formal approval. That came back and they called me for a surgery date. They called me the last week of September, and my earliest available date was 10/11. She gave me dates for both St Alexius in Hoffman and Alexian in Elk Grove. I chose Hoffman on 10/21. She also scheduled my pre-op and post-op appointments with my surgeon.

Then I picked up my pre-op diet powders. I had pre-op testing yesterday at St. Alexius (Blood test, chest x-ray, upper GI Barium swallow, and EKG). Those results were all faxed to my Primary and once she signs off I'm good to go. Right now I'm in the middle of my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. The day before surgery I only drink Clear liquids.

Thanks so much for your detailed response. I guess it all boils down to my insurance. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. I will be seeing Dr. Guske for a consultation. Good luck on your journey!!!

I'm currently waiting for insurance, BCBS, approval. This place is on top of things, that's for sure. I've never received so many appointment reminders! :) I actually love in the city but work in burbs so choose Kane cuz they're not too far from work... And with all the tests and appointments needed, I don't have to miss a lot of time from work.

That's awesome! That puts me at ease. I have gotten great reviews about them so far. Hope you get approved soon. Do you have BCBSIL H. M. O. or PPO? How long did it take you to go through the process?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
