Healthy chili recipes anyone?

Recommended Posts

I am looking ahead to when I can eat more normal foods. In about 6 weeks, when it is getting cold outside, I would like to have a couple healthy WLS friendly chili recipies. Perhaps with turkey? Any good recipes out there?

I don't really use recipes much but I make a turkey chili in the crock pot that is pretty good.

I use turkey tenders, Tomato sauce, canned diced tomatoes, canned green chilis, canned pinto Beans, canned corn. (I should skip the corn)

I saute onions, zucchini, red peppers and carrots.

For seasoning I put in chipotle powder, paprika, garlic salt, onion powder and a McCormicks gluten free chili mix.

I throw everything in the crock pot until the turkey is cooked. Take out the turkey, dice and throw it all back together.

I think McCormick does a low sodium chili seasoning if you want to cut down on the salt.

1lb ground turkey

1 can diced Tomato

1 can tomato paste

1 red onion diced

1 green pepper diced

3 celery sticks chopped

(I like flavorful and fragrant spices so I double up on the spices but this is what the recipe says)

1.5 tsp Cumin

1.5 tsp chili powder cayenne pepper

1.5 tsp salt

0.5 tsp black pepper

I also add cayenne pepper

I get the marmite on Amazon. It adds a lot.

I generally begin with this as my starter and then add whatever appeals to me at the time.....onions, jalapeños, occasionally a habanero, occasionally use Beans, etc, etc.

I brown turkey meat, add a full jar of chunky salsa, one can of red kidney Beans, garlic and hot sauce to taste(buffalo sauce adds good flavor). Simmer for about 20 minutes.

Has anyone been able to recreate the crunch of fritos, etc in chili? I love chili but I love it loaded with cheese, sour cream, and fritos. So... [emoji2

I use the tortilla strips in the salad topping aisle, 2 tbsp are only 30 calories and 4 carbs.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
