Sharp pain in breast post op

Recommended Posts

I'm 5 days post op RNY and today I've had this sharp stabbing pain in my left breast. It only lasts a second and has happen 10-15x. Has anyone experienced this? I think it could be related to the surgery or maybe to the mostly clear liquid diet I've been on, since Ive never had this before.

I was breastfeeding but quit about 4 month ago.

Where in your breast is this pain happening? I also had and still have pain in my breasts from under the arm pit down the outer sides of the breast to the nipple area. I was told it is my veins in my breast reacting to the pulling of my loose skin. I was given gabapentin. However I have lost 266 so to me this made sense. But you say you are only 5 days post op. So I am not really sure this is what you are experiencing. However I do know any kind of pain in the breast is very painful. Hope others may be can provide you with more info. I would also check in with your Dr. and hope you get relief soon.

Dang it, your rny not lap band...I'm on my own...BUT I have been researching this, and I have found that the nerve in your breast controlling the part that shoots burning pain through the nipple in short bursts is called the 4th intercostal nerve, and it connects under the armpit, so it could just be trying to heal. I think that either the tube connecting to my band could be hitting the nerve or the nerve is being bothered under my pit. I found that lightly massaging that area helps...but that's just me and my port :(

Do you have other symptoms such as sudden shortness of breath or chest pain with breathing? If so these might be signs of a pulmonary embolism (blood clot). If this is the case contact your surgeon's office immediately and run it by him/her.

I had that on the side of my left breast. A sharp pain - just as you described. And not constant - I'd get this stabbing pain for just a few seconds or a minute or two several times a day. I thought it might be hormonal (I'm post-menopausal, but who knows) due to the "hormone dump" many people experience after surgery. I asked the PA at my surgeon's office, and he just sort of shrugged it off. It went away after about two weeks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
