Rapid weight loss 1 week out. Nervous

Recommended Posts

Hello, I had my surgery last Wednesday, Oct 5th, and my weight was 324. I started this journey at 372 and lost just about 50lbs on my own. Well, not even one week out of surgery and I've lost 26lbs, I'm down to 298. I'm having a hard time eating and drinking. Not that I get sick, but I just have no desire to eat or drink. I often forget. Well today it caught up with me and i woke up very dizzy and light headed. I drank some Protein Water and a shame and seemed a little better, but by 1pm I was exhausted and napped for 3 hours. I'm planning on calling the Dr tomorrow, but was wondering if anyone else had similar experiences. Thanks

You have to FORCE yourself to drink, whether you like it or not. You will end up in the hospital with dehydration otherwise. At first, this surgery is more about healing and staying hydrated, not weight loss. Force the fluids down, and force yourself to eat....for your health.

Your weight loss is amazing for the first week, but understand it will slow down and even stall in the next few weeks. Don't panic when it happens. It's completely normal.

Take care of yourself! Drink! And eat! One of the biggest parts of this whole thing is learning to love and care for ourselves.

I had rapid weight loss following my sleeve surgery due to post op complications and other issues.

I couldn't eat or drink anything for weeks.

I concentrated on drinking Water. Staying hydrated is so important. So I did that first. Then I tried drinking recommended liquids. Whatever your plan advises.

You must set timers on your phone to tell you to drink.

That's your job right now. Drink Water, get Protein, sleep and rest.

Don't weigh yourself. That's not important right now.

Yes, I had similar experiences and I got through it. Lot of other people here have too.

You will be fine. Just follow your plan.

You should be excited, not nervous. Your body will hit the accelerator when it's done getting rid of the extra fat.

Not really, getting enough Water and Protein is crucial. As she said, she woke up dizzy and weak. No one can live for very long on zero calories, and not getting enough Water will land her back in the hospital. Dehydration is dangerous. When someone has just had major surgery they need to heal completely before worrying about dieting. Complications after surgery are not fun and can take a long time to get over.

Good point. I always forget about dehydration!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
