Hi there - for those having surgery in Mexico, what do you do for post op care? If you need to see a dr. in the states, I have heard they won't see you if you got your surgery in Mexico?

Any insight to clear up my confusion -- thanks so much. I am seriously considering this route b/c insurance won't pay for the surgery.

Thanks!

I spoke to my primary care physician before surgery and he agreed to meet with me every month for 6 months just to make sure I was doing ok after surgery. He can't help me with the actually surgery stuff but nutrition and blood work he can. If I had questions about my surgery or nutrition, I have email addresses for my surgeon and nutritionist and I can email them.

From what I've read on here if you go through BP, the have follow ups with the nutritionist in their surgery packages.

It never hurts to ask your doctor, the worst they can say is no.

Hi mb_11,

If you are considering Mexico as an option for Weight Loss Surgery, you should contact us.

Please give me a call once you have the opportunity.

My theory is that if they won't pay for it then they don't need to know about it. I plan to go to my doc after I'm back to what I would consider normal and request that get a referral for blood work to see if I have Vitamin deficiencies. Otherwise I have zero desire to have any "real" follow up care.

I talked to my primary care doctor and she offered to do the bloodwork for me! That's awesome. She was more agreeable to me having the surgery in Mexico since I chose someone from the Bariatric Center of Excellence website. I am all set for December 14th in Monterrey with Dr. Manuel Garcia Garza.

How did it go in Monterrey?

I called the surgeon I was going to use in Oklahoma and asked if he would be willing to do my post op care. I told them I was going to Tijuana Mexico, working with BariatricPal Team MX, and having gastric bypass with Dr. Illan. I was told that they need surgeon's operative notes, as well as any other notes. I am already on a referral for him anyway, and they do pre- and post-op care. So after he sees those notes, plus my chest x-rays, pre-surgery blood labs, post-op leak test, and a video of my surgery, I'm confident that he will decide to take me on as a post-op patient. I will also contact my Dr. Illan and Bill and Stacy with any questions I have.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
